Singing in the local church choirs as a boy, studying jazz and classical piano performance, composition, and arrangement, and singing and playing keyboards in the ska band Gangster Politics in high school. Watson left the band after graduating and began to explore other types of music, including electronica and ambient. In 2002, after returning from a trip to Vietnam, he decided to start a four-piece chamber pop group, bringing in bassist Mishka Stein, drummer Robbie Kuster (both of whom he had met at university), and former Gangster Politics guitarist Simon Angell. The group (which was technically a solo project with a backing band) released Just Another Ordinary Day (2003) independently.
In 2001 Watson released his first own solo debut, Waterproof9 and in 2006 his second, Close to Paradise. Early in 2007, Watson was nominated for a Juno Canada's music award in the New Artist of the Year category.
His band's song "The Great Escape" was featured on a third-season episode of Grey's Anatomy.
He co-wrote and performed on several songs on The Cinematic Orchestra's 2007 album Ma Fleur including the opening track "To Build a Home". His "Missing You" remix of Champion's "Guy Doune", from Champion's 2006 album The Remix Album, reached #1 on CBC Radio 3's R3-30 chart in early 2007.
Patrick Watson (the band) also won the prestigeous Polaris Music Prize (Canada) in 2007.

Blackwind
Patrick Watson Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
To catch the winds
From where they are going
And where they have been
Don't try to outrun
What the winds are showing
Just got to give in
To where they are blowing
'Cause who are we
Who are we
Without the ones we love and have loved
Sometimes it blows you down
And weathers your face and leaves us no trace
When you find yourself far from home
Well, it's better to lose than to stand still where you don't belong
Oh, the rooftops are up in the air
While the inside of our lives are blowing around
Flying out of control
Black winds blowing us up up off the ground
Everybody hold on to the ones that you love
Black wind blowing us harder every day
Don't waste your time holding on to yesterdays
Everybody smile while the wind blows us around
Can't control the weather just got to bring what you need
Hands in the air, everybody give in to the storm
Don't try too hard
To catch the winds
From where they are going
And where they have been
Just got to give in
To where they are blowing
The song "Blackwind" by Patrick Watson is a hauntingly beautiful reflection on the nature of life and the winds that carry us through it. The lyrics urge the listener not to fight against the currents of life, but to surrender to them and allow them to take us where we need to go.
The first verse speaks of the winds, both metaphorically and literally. The winds represent the various paths and challenges we encounter in life, and the advice is to not try too hard to catch them or outrun them, but to give in to their direction. The chorus then questions our own identity without the people we love, emphasizing the importance of human connection in navigating the journey through life.
The second verse paints a picture of the hardships we face in life but reminds us that we are stronger than we often realize. The lyrics describe the winds as tossing us around like rooftops, yet we must hold on to the ones we love and smile in the face of adversity. Finally, the song comes full circle with a repetition of the initial advice - don't try too hard to catch the winds, just give in to where they are blowing. In essence, the song is a gentle reminder to let go of control and simply trust the journey of life.
