Singing in the local church choirs as a boy, studying jazz and classical piano performance, composition, and arrangement, and singing and playing keyboards in the ska band Gangster Politics in high school. Watson left the band after graduating and began to explore other types of music, including electronica and ambient. In 2002, after returning from a trip to Vietnam, he decided to start a four-piece chamber pop group, bringing in bassist Mishka Stein, drummer Robbie Kuster (both of whom he had met at university), and former Gangster Politics guitarist Simon Angell. The group (which was technically a solo project with a backing band) released Just Another Ordinary Day (2003) independently.
In 2001 Watson released his first own solo debut, Waterproof9 and in 2006 his second, Close to Paradise. Early in 2007, Watson was nominated for a Juno Canada's music award in the New Artist of the Year category.
His band's song "The Great Escape" was featured on a third-season episode of Grey's Anatomy.
He co-wrote and performed on several songs on The Cinematic Orchestra's 2007 album Ma Fleur including the opening track "To Build a Home". His "Missing You" remix of Champion's "Guy Doune", from Champion's 2006 album The Remix Album, reached #1 on CBC Radio 3's R3-30 chart in early 2007.
Patrick Watson (the band) also won the prestigeous Polaris Music Prize (Canada) in 2007.

Fireweed
Patrick Watson Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
In the morning
Quiet ashes fell
For hours and hours
And in the morning rise
We planted our skin
Like a seed in the ground
And planted all our skin
Like a seed in the ground
To grow again
Where the fireweeds grow
Where the fireweeds grow
Where the fireweeds grow
The lyrics of Patrick Watson's song Fireweed appears to address the aftermath of a destructive crisis or accident, where the entire surrounding has been burnt down, and there's nothing left except for quiet ashes. The image of ashes falling for hours and hours in the morning following the flames gives a glimpse of the aftermath of such a crisis. The lines "we planted our skin like a seed in the ground" have a profound meaning behind them - the idea of picking up the pieces and starting again, like a seed that is planted in the ground, growing and blossoming into something new.
The chorus of the song draws our attention to where the fireweeds grow. Fireweed is a type of plant species that has an incredible ability to grow in areas that have been destroyed by wildfires. It thrives in barren fields and burnt debris where other plants can't grow. The song's lyrics seem to suggest that just like the fireweed, we too can grow and rebuild, even after experiencing the worst.
The song Fireweed provides a message of hope, resilience and the ability to overcome adversity. It pictures a scenario where there is destruction all around, but amidst all of it, there is a new beginning, a chance to rise from the ashes and grow again.

After all the flames
Once the fire has burnt everything up
In the morning
The morning after the fire
Quiet ashes fell
The aftermath of the fire was quiet with ash settling down
For hours and hours
The quietness lasted for a long time
And in the morning rise
At the dawn of the new day
We planted our skin
We took our damaged selves and started anew
Like a seed in the ground
Starting fresh, we buried ourselves to grow again
So we dug ourselves a hole
We made the choice to start over
And planted all our skin
We left our old selves behind, and began anew
To grow again
To begin again, to plant ourselves and grow
Where the fireweeds grow
In a place where flowers grow after a fire
Where the fireweeds grow
In a place where there is potential for new growth
Where the fireweeds grow
In a place of rebirth and rejuvenation
