Singing in the local church choirs as a boy, studying jazz and classical piano performance, composition, and arrangement, and singing and playing keyboards in the ska band Gangster Politics in high school. Watson left the band after graduating and began to explore other types of music, including electronica and ambient. In 2002, after returning from a trip to Vietnam, he decided to start a four-piece chamber pop group, bringing in bassist Mishka Stein, drummer Robbie Kuster (both of whom he had met at university), and former Gangster Politics guitarist Simon Angell. The group (which was technically a solo project with a backing band) released Just Another Ordinary Day (2003) independently.
In 2001 Watson released his first own solo debut, Waterproof9 and in 2006 his second, Close to Paradise. Early in 2007, Watson was nominated for a Juno Canada's music award in the New Artist of the Year category.
His band's song "The Great Escape" was featured on a third-season episode of Grey's Anatomy.
He co-wrote and performed on several songs on The Cinematic Orchestra's 2007 album Ma Fleur including the opening track "To Build a Home". His "Missing You" remix of Champion's "Guy Doune", from Champion's 2006 album The Remix Album, reached #1 on CBC Radio 3's R3-30 chart in early 2007.
Patrick Watson (the band) also won the prestigeous Polaris Music Prize (Canada) in 2007.

Huracán
Patrick Watson Lyrics

Huracan
Caught inside a hurricane
Twisting through my brain
Waiting for the moment that till sweep me from the ground
Caught inside a hurricane
Waiting for the moment that it'll take this world away
Away from me
Away from me
Away from me
Away from me....
Life is wonderful
And the clouds have turned to gold
And the wind has gone to bed
And the suns broke free again
(broke free again) x9
Caught inside the eye of the storm
Looking into the world
Seems to be so blow away
Sad sky falls
And all the clouds have seem so far away
Walking out through the fields
Everything looks so real
Cause everything I had is gone
Is gone
It's quiet like a meadow now
After all
It's at the eye of the storm
Waiting for the wind to come
Oh the storm is slowly running through my head
The wind is not just knocking at my door
Cause I'm waiting here for the storm
To take me from the ground
Caught inside a hurricane
Twisting through my brain
Waiting for the moment that it'll sweep me from the ground
Caught inside a hurricane
Blowing every way
Waiting for the moment that it'll take this world away
Away from me
Away from me
The song "Huracan" by Patrick Watson is a somewhat haunting meditation on the unpredictability of life, and the powerlessness that we sometimes feel in the face of forces beyond our control. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of being caught inside a hurricane, twisting and turning through one's brain, waiting for the moment when it will sweep everything away. It's clear that the hurricane is a metaphor for any number of things: maybe it's a dangerous emotional state or a major life change; maybe it's some kind of internal struggle or crisis. Whatever it is, the person at the center of the song is powerless to stop it.
The second half of the song is somewhat lighter in tone, with the singer reflecting on the beauty of life and the silver lining that comes with every storm. They acknowledge that the storm has caused them to lose things that were once precious to them, but they take comfort in the fact that the world is still beautiful, that the sun has broken free again, and that life is wonderful in spite of everything. Even inside the eye of the storm, there is hope that it will eventually pass and something beautiful will be waiting on the other side.
Overall, "Huracan" is a beautifully written song that captures the conflicting emotions that come with major upheavals in life. It's raw, honest, and deeply personal, and it's sure to resonate with anyone who's ever felt caught inside a hurricane of their own.
