Singing in the local church choirs as a boy, studying jazz and classical piano performance, composition, and arrangement, and singing and playing keyboards in the ska band Gangster Politics in high school. Watson left the band after graduating and began to explore other types of music, including electronica and ambient. In 2002, after returning from a trip to Vietnam, he decided to start a four-piece chamber pop group, bringing in bassist Mishka Stein, drummer Robbie Kuster (both of whom he had met at university), and former Gangster Politics guitarist Simon Angell. The group (which was technically a solo project with a backing band) released Just Another Ordinary Day (2003) independently.
In 2001 Watson released his first own solo debut, Waterproof9 and in 2006 his second, Close to Paradise. Early in 2007, Watson was nominated for a Juno Canada's music award in the New Artist of the Year category.
His band's song "The Great Escape" was featured on a third-season episode of Grey's Anatomy.
He co-wrote and performed on several songs on The Cinematic Orchestra's 2007 album Ma Fleur including the opening track "To Build a Home". His "Missing You" remix of Champion's "Guy Doune", from Champion's 2006 album The Remix Album, reached #1 on CBC Radio 3's R3-30 chart in early 2007.
Patrick Watson (the band) also won the prestigeous Polaris Music Prize (Canada) in 2007.

Sunday
Patrick Watson Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
In the nighttime, the night
Whenever we are
Summers came
We lost our time, is eating in years by my mind
I want you to come back and take it away
The despair in the world
Whatever you saw
And you come with some
Plant butterflies
They're eating my mind
I want you to come back and take them away
Your butterflies are eating my mind
I wish you'd come back and take them away
See you on Sunday
See you Sunday
You know it was nice with all the time
You are the music in my world
I've gotta fly, I've got a thousand flies in my mind
See you on...
See you on Sunday
See you on Sunday
See you on Sunday
The lyrics to Patrick Watson's song Sunday are cryptic and enigmatic, with a wistful and melancholy tone that hints at sorrow and yearning for what was lost. The opening line "See you on Sunday" is perhaps the most optimistic and hopeful moment in the song, with the singer looking forward to a reunion with a loved one. This phrase repeats several times throughout the song, almost like a mantra or affirmation to keep hope alive. The phrase "in the nighttime, the night" could be interpreted as a symbol of darkness or uncertainty, with the singer unsure of what will happen once they meet again.
The following lines speak of lost time and memories that have been eaten away by the passage of years, creating a sense of regret and longing. The metaphor of "plant butterflies" eating away at the singer's mind suggests the presence of some kind of mental or emotional turmoil, perhaps related to the separation from the loved one. The repeated refrain "I want you to come back and take them away" emphasizes the desire for the other person to alleviate this pain and offer comfort.
The overall effect of the lyrics is haunting and evocative, capturing the bittersweet emotions of love and loss. The song's title, "Sunday", suggests a day of rest and reflection, adding to the mood of introspection and nostalgia.
