Singing in the local church choirs as a boy, studying jazz and classical piano performance, composition, and arrangement, and singing and playing keyboards in the ska band Gangster Politics in high school. Watson left the band after graduating and began to explore other types of music, including electronica and ambient. In 2002, after returning from a trip to Vietnam, he decided to start a four-piece chamber pop group, bringing in bassist Mishka Stein, drummer Robbie Kuster (both of whom he had met at university), and former Gangster Politics guitarist Simon Angell. The group (which was technically a solo project with a backing band) released Just Another Ordinary Day (2003) independently.
In 2001 Watson released his first own solo debut, Waterproof9 and in 2006 his second, Close to Paradise. Early in 2007, Watson was nominated for a Juno Canada's music award in the New Artist of the Year category.
His band's song "The Great Escape" was featured on a third-season episode of Grey's Anatomy.
He co-wrote and performed on several songs on The Cinematic Orchestra's 2007 album Ma Fleur including the opening track "To Build a Home". His "Missing You" remix of Champion's "Guy Doune", from Champion's 2006 album The Remix Album, reached #1 on CBC Radio 3's R3-30 chart in early 2007.
Patrick Watson (the band) also won the prestigeous Polaris Music Prize (Canada) in 2007.

Patrick Watson Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Waiting for a chance
A glimpse to his fate
But there's a silence around screaming
Warning
Close up your eyes and enter the dream
And as you're looking at your sides
There's a man watching
Tells its hard smell the fear that you lose
So you wait
I'm too tired
Lower your head
Aren't you tired?
All in your head
I feel tired
Ahhhhh.....
Close
Don't you close
The lyrics to Patrick Watson's song "Woods" describe the experience of waiting for something to happen - for fate to reveal itself - while surrounded by an eerie silence that seems to be screaming out a warning. The "man walking in the dark" is a representation of the unknown and the feeling of uncertainty that often accompanies it. As we wait for our chance, we are confronted by a sense of fear that we may never accomplish what we have set out to do.
The lyrics also suggest the presence of other forces that seem to be working against our success. The "man watching" creates a sense of pressure and intimidation, while the reference to "smell(ing) the fear" emphasizes the importance of remaining strong in the face of adversity. Despite these obstacles, the singer encourages us to keep our eyes open and enter the dream - to remain focused on our goals and not allow ourselves to become overwhelmed by the challenges before us.
Overall, "Woods" is a song about perseverance and the importance of maintaining a sense of optimism and determination even in the face of difficult circumstances. The eerie silence and mysterious characters that populate the lyrics create a sense of tension and unease that underscores the challenges of navigating the unknown, but ultimately, the song urges us to keep moving forward and stay focused on our dreams.
