Sweet Dreams
Patsy Cline Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sweet dreams of you
Every night, I go through
Why can't I forget you and start my life anew
Instead of having sweet dreams about you

You don't love me, it's plain
I should know I'll never wear your ring
I should hate you the whole night through
Instead of having sweet dreams about you

Sweet dreams of you
Things I know can't come true

Why can't I forget the past, start loving someone new
Instead of having sweet dreams about you

Overall Meaning

The lyric of Patsy Cline’s Sweet Dreams is a vivid portrayal of a person caught in the grip of unrequited love. The singer speaks to a lover, asking why she can’t forget and move on from the relationship. She acknowledges that he does not love her, and that she should be able to hate him, but instead, she finds herself dreaming sweetly of him every night. The lyric seems to be a chorus of sorts, an almost desperate plea to herself to let go and move on.

The song is telling the story of someone who’s struggling with a past relationship. It’s a song about feeling trapped in a cycle of nostalgia and longing for something that will never be. The singer wants nothing more than to forget the past and start over with someone new, but she can’t seem to shake her attachment to her former lover. She’s describing a universal experience of unrequited love, and the way in which we can become addicted to the feeling of loving someone who doesn’t love us back- and how difficult it can be to let go.

Beautiful voice, accentuated by life experiences and sorrows....so much to miss now that she is gone. A family friend loved her music, as well....he drove the crummy for the loggers on his logging site, and always played Patsy Cline's 8 track in his truck. A special favorite and memory. RIP Dan, and Patsy!

I don't care how many times I hear this song. That very first note when Patsy belts out the word "sweet" gives me chills on my arms. It never fails.
