Walking After Midnight
Patsy Cline Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I go out walkin' after midnight
Out in the moonlight
Just like we used to do
I'm always walkin' after midnight searchin' for you

I walk for miles along the highway
Well, that's just my way
Of sayin' I love you
I'm always walkin' after midnight, searchin' for you

I stop to see a weepin' willow
Cryin' on his pillow
Maybe he's cryin' for me
And as the skies turn gloomy
Night winds whisper to me
I'm lonesome as I can be

I go out walkin' after midnight
Out in the starlight
Just hopin' you may be
Somewhere a-walkin' after midnight, searchin' for me

I stop to see a weepin' willow
Cryin' on his pillow
Maybe he's cryin' for me
And as the skies turn gloomy
Night winds whisper to me
I'm lonesome as I can be

I go out walkin' after midnight
Out in the starlight

Just hopin' you may be
Somewhere a-walkin' after midnight, searchin' for me

Overall Meaning

In Patsy Cline's hit song "Walking After Midnight," the singer expresses her yearning to be reunited with a lost love. The lyrics convey a sense of desperation as she walks aimlessly in the moonlight, hoping to stumble upon her lover. The first verse introduces the theme of the song, with the singer admitting that she is always "searchin' for you." She walks for miles along the highway, confessing that this is her way of saying "I love you." The second verse suggests that the singer is haunted by the memory of her lost love, conjuring images of a weeping willow crying on his pillow. The night winds whisper to her that she is "lonesome as I can be."

The chorus repeats itself throughout the song, emphasizing the singer's persistent search for her lost love, always walking after midnight, hoping to find him. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of a woman completely consumed by her love for someone who is no longer with her. She walks beneath the starlight, hoping that her lost love is somewhere walking after midnight, searching for her.

Overall, the song is a classic example of country music's ability to tell a melancholic yet relatable story with simple, straightforward lyrics.

Im here because it was my grandmother's favorite song, she sang it all the time. 2 months ago, I held her hand as her heart stopped beating. I miss her so much, but this song makes me feel close to her. She is out there walking, and some day I will find her again.

My mom used to sing this. I'd wake up on Sunday mornings to her playing her records and singing along with them using the tv remote as a microphone. She passed away in April. I miss singing and dancing around the living room with her.
