You Belong To Me
Patsy Cline Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

See the pyramids along the Nile
Watch the sunrise on a tropic isle
Just remember darlin' all the while
You belong to me

See the market place in Old Algiers
Send me photographs and souvenirs
Just remember when a dream appears
You belong to me

I'll be so alone without you
Maybe you'll be lonesome too, and blue

Fly the ocean in a silver plane
See the jungle when it's wet with rain
Just remember 'til you're home again
You belong to me

(This portion, sung by background singers,
omitted in later release)
(I'll be so alone without you
Maybe you'll be lonesome too, and blue)

Fly the ocean in a silver plane
See the jungle when it's wet with rain
Just remember 'til you're home again
You belong to me

(Repeat last verse)

(Jim Reeves demo)

See the pyramids along the Nile
Watch the sunset on a tropic isle
Just remember darlin' all the while
You belong to me

See the market place in Old Algiers
Send me photographs and souvenirs
Just remember when a dream appears
You belong to me

I'll be so alone without you
Maybe you'll be lonesome too, and blue

Fly the ocean in a silver plane
See the jungle when it's wet with rain
Just remember 'til I'm home again
You belong to me

(Repeat last two verses)

See the pyramids along the Nile
Watch the sunrise on a tropic isle
Just remember darlin' all the while
You belong to me

See the market place in Old Algiers
Send me photographs and souvenirs
Just remember when a dream appears
You belong to me

I'll be so alone without you
Maybe you'll be lonesome too, and blue

Fly the ocean in a silver plane
See the jungle when it's wet with rain
Just remember 'til you're home again
You belong to me

I'm gonna be so alone without you
And I'm hopin' maybe you'll be lonesome, too, and blue

Fly that ocean in a silver plane
See the jungle when it's wet with rain

Just remember til you're home again
You belong to me

Overall Meaning

The song "You Belong to Meโ€ by Patsy Cline describes the longing and anticipation of a lover while the other half is away traveling the world. The lyrics evoke the landscapes that the traveler may come across on her journey and suggests that beautiful as these sights may be, they all pale in comparison to the significance of their relationship. The first verse mentions the pyramids along the Nile and watching the sunrise on a tropical isle. The second verse takes the listener to the marketplace in Old Algiers and to the sights and sounds of a dream that may appear. The chorus repeats, reminding the lover that she belongs to him. The final verse talks about the loneliness felt by both people as they are separated, concluding with the promise that she belongs to him until she returns home. Interestingly, many recording artists have since covered this classic song.

You know, back then there was no such thing as autotune. This was really her voice, her perfect pitch, her extraordinary phrasing...effortless... They could mechanically increase the clarity and sweetness of tone, but not much more. She sings like it's no big deal and she sounds like perfection.... I sing opera, but I can't sing like Patsy...
