Enjoy The Silence
Patti Austin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Words like violence break the silence
Come crashing in, into my little world
Painful to me, pierce right through me
Can't you understand I am a little girl?

All I ever wanted, all I ever needed
Is here in my arms
Words are very unnecessary
They can only do harm

Words are spoken to be broken
Feelings are intense, words are trivial
Pleasures remain, so does the pain
Words are meaningless and forgettable

All I ever wanted, all I ever needed
Is here in my arms
Words are very unnecessary
They can only do harm

All I ever wanted, all I ever needed
Is here in my arms
Words are very unnecessary

They can only do harm, only do harm
Only do harm

Overall Meaning

In Patti Austin’s song “Enjoy the Silence,” the lyrics portray the power and influence of language. The opening lines “Words like violence break the silence” establish the idea that words can inflict hurt and penetrate deeply. The singer refers to herself as a “little girl” which implies vulnerability and that she is easily wounded. The chorus, “All I ever wanted, all I ever needed, Is here in my arms, Words are very unnecessary, They can only do harm” suggests that actions speak louder than words and that words are unable to provide the comfort and fulfillment she desires.

The second verse deepens this perspective as “Words are spoken to be broken, Feelings are intense, words are trivial.” The singer believes that language is superficial and fleeting, unable to fully express the depth of emotions. Instead, pleasure and pain are what remain, suggesting the singer values the sense and feelings behind language more than mere empty words. Overall, “Enjoy the Silence” suggests that in some cases, words should be used sparingly as they can cause more harm than good.

Two of the sounds that I fell in love with in the 80s...Patti Austin & Depeche Mode. Together?? I am in 80's heaven! This song is completely hypnoic and I love it! I remember in 7th grade, getting ready for school and blasting "Baby Come To Me"! Almost 30 years later this amazing lady is still rocking out....and may I add she only gets better with time! SO excited to have amazing singers like this to share with my daughter. She's only 3 and she's going to be raised right! <3 you Patti!

See? Now this is a SINGER. Patti doing Depeche Mode. I MIGHT've heard this song b4 but don't exactly have DM in my collection. Now I know borh versions & she's done a VERY fine job. Patti, Chaka & Aretha have always done the best cover songs b/c they re-think the arrangements & don't just sing them like the orig artists.
