LaBelle has fronted two moderately successful groups, Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles and LaBelle, before rising to superstardom as a solo artist in the late 1970s. She is best known for her strong soprano vocals and her signature high-octave vocal belting. LaBelle has been largely compared to Aretha Franklin during the 1970s, but her distinguishing vocal range remains unique and recognizable, and she is widely regarded as one of the greatest vocalists of all-time by such industry publications and media outlets as Jet Magazine, BET and VH1. LaBelle has recorded 16 solo studio albums since her solo debut in 1977. LaBelle has also reportedly sold more than 50 million albums. Her biography, Don't Block the Blessings, remained at the top of the New York Times best seller list for several weeks. In addition, she is also a bestselling cookbook author - on Twitter as @LaBelleFoods.
She has received recognition of her works in music, being inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Apollo Hall of Fame, the Songwriters' Hall of Fame as well as the World Music Awards presenting her with the prestigious Legend Award. In 2012 and 2013, LaBelle embarked on the 50th Anniversary Tour, celebrating her years in the music business.

Music is the way I live Im alive and living now
WELL i come from a world were theres nothing you can live for
Except when day turns into night I'am the star in neon lights
I know the only way out is thru my dancing thats when I let my fantasys
When I dance they look at me thats the one thing you can't take from me is the music thatI feel in my soul
When the daylight comes and im leaving the dance floor by nightime I'll be back for more
Music is the way I live, I'm alive and living now
Music is the way I live, I'm alive and living now
As my heart beats to the rhytm of the music people turn their heads and stare
Watching as I'm dancing there Im best when im dancing
My feet can dance upon a dime I'll give back 5 cent given time
Thats one thing you can take from me the music that i feel in my soul
When the daylight comes and I'm leaving the dance floor by night time I'll be back for more
Music is the way I live, I'm alive and living now
Music is the way I live, I'm alive and living now
Muisc is the way I live I'm alive and living now from the day that I was born I can feel it, FEEL IT
And when the music plays I gotta keep Dancin

That opening line, "well I come from the world where there's nothing you can live for, except when day turns into night, I'm the star in neon lights" is a narrative to be understood. It testifies the experience shared by many who risked rejection, scorn, violence, just being who we were, dressed as we were, looking like we looked, just walking down Jerome Ave, Jamaica Ave, to get to the train to go to the club.
