I have a CD from the 1980s called "Super Oldies of the 60's, Vol. 3," which has a recording of "I Sold My Heart To The Junkman" that really is by Patti LaBelle And The Bluebelles. It is a much faster version (2:11) and has Patti's trademark high notes. It's an exciting record that makes the above version sound almost like a ballad.

In 1962, the Chicago-based girl group the Starlets were riding high with their top forty single, "Better Tell Him No". That year, while on tour, they were convinced by Newtown Records president Harold Robinson to appear in a recording schedule where they recorded two songs. One of these songs was "I Sold My Heart to the Junkman". After recording the songs, Robinson released the song on his label but instead of crediting the Starlets, credited a Philadelphia-based girl group named The Ordettes, who had changed their name to The Blue Belles - after a threat from another record boss, the name was altered to Patti LaBelle and Her Blue Belles.

The song eventually reached number fifteen on the Billboard Hot 100 thanks to promotion of the song by the Blue Belles, who made their first television appearance on American Bandstand in mid-1962. It is unknown as to whether Robinson erased the original lead vocal from the song and added in Patti LaBelle's lead vocal, or whether the Starlets themselves were replaced by session singers. Nevertheless, the Starlets' manager sued Robinson for ownership of the song, with the girls each winning $5,000 from the suit.[1] Despite this, however, it is still not clear as to how the song was released.

Ironically when the Blue Belles recorded their own version shortly before promoting it, both the Starlets and Blue Belles' versions were strikingly similar. The Starlets did not fully recover from the "Junkman" scandal and after a half-year of new recordings, disbanded in 1963.[1] Meanwhile, the newly christened Patti LaBelle and the Blue Belles went on to national fame that year with their hit, "Down the Aisle (The Wedding Song)".

The part of the name change to The BlueBelles for Patti & Company is not accurate. They were The Ordettes and only changed their name because "Junkman" became a hit and The Starlets couldn't claim it as their own.

Since The Starlets couldn't use the name Bluebelles and Harold Robinson lost the court case, he had to make sure that Patti's group had a distinguishing name, so he christened 19 year-old Patricia Holte "Patti LaBelle".

@mystkpizza Actually Patti and the Bluebelles did record a version of this song. We just had a brief discussion about it over at Spectropop. The version they recorded was issued on a Sweethearts of the Apollo LP with dubbed in live crowd sounds. It was much faster and shorter (coming in at 2 minutes). It was released without the crowd sounds on a cassette in the 80s or 90s. Both versions are quite nice.

The way the song came out and was recorded by another group. The lead singer sounded like Patti but that group was under contract with another label and the record producer didn't think it would be a hit. It was and he scrambled to find a group to do the song live and to push out a record: enter the Bluebelles. This was all in Patti's wonderful book "Don't Block The Blessings." She wrote that she already had a hit song and never sung one note on it and talked about the shady side of the record business. The producer Patti and the Bluebelles were all eventually sued by the Starlettes (or whatever the name of the group who sung this song).

Thank you, very much! I have the 'original version' on two different labels. Including stereo, much better fidelity, here. Probably recorded two track, good vocal, of course Patti is a great singer, also. The instrumentation is so close, almost certainly the original track, or music recorded at the same session. As mono was the 'state of the art,' back then, the instrumentation could have been recorded first, by itself, then the vocals. Mixed to one channel, then, for release. Does anyone know if the original label, issued an album? Even, in Stereo? Possible, not necessarily likely, with just one hit. There are anthologies of music licensed to Canadian & British labels, containing U. S. hits; these tapes were preserved well, sound good, today. On CD's. As I recall, this hit is on one of these, along with other great music from this period, otherwise hard to find high quality dubs. Thanks again!

This is an alternate (stereo) take of The Starlets from Chicago singing. The group, Maxine Edwards (lead), Jane Hall, Mickie McKinney and Jeanette Miles were duped into recording this for Harold B. Robinson. When the song became a hit, he couldn't use The Starlets because they were under contract. He gathered a group called The Ordettes, who lip-synced the song on American Bandstand. The four young ladies, who had talent all their own, became Patti LaBelle & The Bluebelles.

I was in grade school, bought the record. This was Patti LaBelle and you can hear her voice. Has anyone ever heard of the word "Youth" she was young. So if I was about 13 or so, she may have been 17....a child. Everyone that knew the record and knows Patti knew that she started with this song. I loved it by the way. So cute! I can still see my sisters and I dancing on this!

She claimed in her autobiography that another girl group had recorded it under the name of the Bluebells and the guy brought them in to promote it. I think they recorded a version too, but I'm not sure. Any way the girls ended up getting sued over it.

I love how girls looke in those days - so chaste. Patty LaBelle is a "Diva" of American R&B. Whoever is singing this has done a wonderful job, but I'm sure Patty could cover as well. After all the song was a cover from the 1940's anyway. This is not an original song, it is just a restyling and a very, very good one.

This is a nicely cleaned-up version (although parts of it betray an alternate take ) of the original recording by Chicago group, The Starlets. None of Patti LaBelle's Bluebelles recorded this. The only version by Patti & Co. is a live version. The Starlets, lead singer Maxine Edwards (sister of Earl Edwards of The Dukays, co-writer of "Duke of Earl", Jane Hall, who wrote the flip, "Itty Bitty Twist", Jeanette Miles and the late Mickey McKinney. Because of their naivete, they were talked into recording this for DJ and auto saleman Harold B. Robinson. When the song was released and became a hit, The Starlets couldn't claim it as their own because they inadvertently broke their contract. When the powers that be went to court over claims monies owed them, this all came to light. The Starlets settled, but it cost them their career. You all know what became of The Ordettes, who lip-synced the song on television with their newly bestowed moniker, The Bluebelles. If you listen closely, you hear music and backing vocals die before lead singing stops. Assume music & backing vocals were prerecorded, why "stereo" is available. My guess, like many other songs, they were just waiting for the best lead vocalist to finalize their song..

@Worme95 Cindy Birdsong, in an interview, stated the song was already on the radio but the group (The Starlets) couldn't go out and promote it because the lead singer shot her husband! A promoter asked the Bluebelles if they could sing it the same way (which they did) and the rest is history. Cindy says that, to this day, she can't tell the two versions apart.

A bit of old school trivia... truth be told Patti & the girls never recorded this song. It was recorded by a group from Chicago name The Starletts but they were under contract to a Chicago label but recorded this song one night after a show in Philadelphia for the guy who would become Patti Labelles Managed - he released the record under the guise of The Bluebelles because legally he could not release it under The Starletts - That why is doesnt sould like Patti - It's not her

patti labelle was part of the bluebelles. I went to high school with a member of the Bluebelles and Patti lives near my sister on the Main Line outside of Philly.
