I Went To Your Wedding
Patti Page Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I went to your wedding
Although I was dreading
The thought of losing you
The organ was playing
My poor heart kept saying
"My dreams, my dreams are through"

You came down the aisle, wearing a smile
A vision of loveliness
I uttered a sigh, and then whispered goodbye
Goodbye to my happiness

Your mother was crying
Your father was crying
And I was crying too
The teardrops were falling
Because we were losin' you

You came down the aisle, wearing a smile
A vision of loveliness
I uttered a sigh, and then whispered goodbye
Goodbye to my happiness

Oh, your mother was crying
Your father was crying
And I was crying too

The teardrops were falling
Because we were losing you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Patti Page's song "I Went To Your Wedding" narrate a story of someone who attended their lover's wedding and had to witness them moving on with someone else. The first verse of the song expresses the singer's reluctance to attend the wedding because of the sadness it would bring them. The organ playing in the background serves as a constant reminder to the singer that this wedding marks the end of their love story. The lyrics "my dreams are through" portrays the feeling of hopelessness and despair that accompany the ending of a relationship.

The second verse talks about the arrival of the bride at the wedding, looking radiant in her white dress. The singer can't help but feel sad as they realize that their relationship with the bride is coming to an end. The line, "Goodbye to my happiness" indicates that the singer understands that their previous happiness with the bride is over. The third verse talks about how everyone at the wedding is crying, including the singer, the bride's parents, and the others present, but for different reasons. The singer is weeping because they are losing the person they loved, and the bride's parents are shedding tears of joy for their daughter's marriage.

When I was a young boy in the early 50s, this song was played frequently in our house. I loved it then and still do.

Do you ever wonder why her songs are so sad? In Tennessee Waltz, she lost her boyfriend to an old friend she introduced. In Changing Partners, she has the fear of losing her partner and wants to hold him forever. And this song, I Went To Your Wedding is another very sad one; she attends the wedding of the man she had dreams of marrying so she could say goodbye to her own happiness as she sees them walking down the aisle happily married. 😢😢😢

This is the sequel to "Tennessee Waltz." If he leaves you for your friend and marries her, throw your oldest shoes at him, telling him exactly what he did to you and go no contact. Do not go to his wedding! Why torture yourself? Realize he will probably be unfaithful to her as well.

This is better than the MCU Universe storylines lol

Marlene Rodulfa

@erinpilla Lol. It is a beautiful but sad story if there will ever be made one out of these songs. Tearjerker, popcorn-worthy! 😊❤️
