People try to put us d-down (Talkin' 'bout my generation)
Just because we get around (Talkin' 'bout my generation)
Well I don't need that fuckin' shit (Talkin' 'bout my generation)
Hope I die because of it (Talkin' 'bout my generation)

(Generation)

Why don't you all f-fade away (Talkin' 'bout my generation)
Try to dig what we all s-s-say (Talkin' 'bout my generation)
I'm not trying to cause a big s-s-sensation (Talkin' 'bout my generation)
Talkin' 'bout my g-g-g-generation (Talkin' 'bout my generation)

My generation
My generation

People try to put us d-down (Talkin' 'bout my generation)
Just because we g-g-get around (Talkin' 'bout my generation)
I don't need that fuckin' shit (Talkin' 'bout my generation)
Hope I die because of it (Talkin' 'bout my generation)

My generation, baby
My generation, baby

I'm not trying to start a new sensation (Talkin' 'bout my generation)
Just talkin' 'bout my g-g-g-generation (Talkin' 'bout my generation)

My generation, baby
My generation, baby

Overall Meaning

Patti Smith's My Generation is a rebellious anthem that expresses the frustration and disillusionment felt by the youth of the 1960s. The song is a commentary on the generational divide that existed at the time, with the older generations looking down on the younger ones for their attitudes and behaviors. The lyrics "People try to put us d-down" and "Why don't you all f-fade away" capture this sentiment perfectly, as the singer laments the lack of understanding and acceptance by the older generations.

However, the song is not just a complaint. The lines "Try to dig what we all s-s-say" and "Just talkin' 'bout my g-g-g-generation" suggest that the younger generations have something valuable to say, and that they should be listened to instead of dismissed outright. The repeated refrain of "My generation, baby" emphasizes this point, asserting the pride and defiance of the singer and their peers.

Overall, My Generation celebrates the spirit of rebellion and nonconformity that characterized the 1960s counterculture movement. It is a rallying cry for the youth of the time to stand up for themselves and their beliefs, and to demand a place at the table of society.

Thank God for giving us Patti Smith. Such a beautiful, brilliant, and badass soul.

@bugman247

When I saw Patti Smith at UMass, they did this song as their encore. In the middle of the song, Patti and Lenny Kaye reached down and grabbed the hands of two random audience members. THey strapped electirc guitars on the two guys and let them make noise for awhile, and then Patti and the band smashed their guitars. That was the end of the show

I bet the Who love this version. It was always suppose to be a hard hitting song just like they perform it live. Only Patti could give it the real edge it deserved. Awesome

@squinkque

My favorite line in this song is, "John Cale."

@PedroBenolielBonito

Mine too. I love pre-guitar solo shout outs to the soloist.
