We Three Kings
Patti Smith Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And low the star which they saw in the east
When before there them till it came and stood over with the young child
And they saw the star they rejoiced

We three kings of orient are, bearing gifts we traverse afar
Field and fountain, moor and mountain, following yonder star

(And they saw the star they rejoiced)
Born a King on Bethlehem's plain,
Gold I bring to crown him again
King for ever, ceasing never over us all to reign

Myrrh is mine, its bitter perfume breathes a life of gathering gloom
Bleeding, dying, sighing, sealed in the stone cold tomb

All glorious now behold him arise, Christ and his sacrifice
Alleluia, alleluia, heaven to earth replies
Worship him, God most high, oh

Oh, star of wonder, star of night, star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding

Guide us with thy perfect light
Guide us with thy perfect light

Overall Meaning

In Patti Smith's version of the popular Christmas carol "We Three Kings," the singer takes the listener on a journey of the biblical story of the three wise men who followed a star to bring gifts to the newborn King of Bethlehem. The first verse starts by describing how the star appeared in the east and led the three kings, known also as the three magi, to where the baby was born.

The second verse reveals the types of gifts that the kings brought with them - gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Gold was presented as a symbol of wealth and royalty, which denoted that the baby born was indeed a king. Frankincense was presented as a symbol of divinity and spirituality, showing that the baby was perceived as a divine being. Lastly, myrrh was presented as a type of burial ointment, typically used to anoint the dead, foreshadowing the ultimate sacrifice that the baby would make for humanity.

In the final verse, Patti Smith calls upon the star, which to her represents Christ, to guide and lead us. By focusing on the Christmas story, Smith brings to light the themes of love, hope, and sacrifice that are closely associated with the holiday season.
