I'm That Kind Of Girl
Patty Loveless Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's a man in a Stetson hat, howlin' like an alley cat
Outside my window tonight
Sayin', "Baby, put on something hot, meet me in the parking lot
About a quarter to nine"

I get the feelin' that he's never read Romeo and Juliet
I'm gettin' tired of these one night stands
But if you want to make a real romance

I'm that kind of girl, I'm that kind of girl
I ain't the woman in red, I ain't the girl next door
But if somewhere in the middle's what you're lookin' for
I'm that kind of girl, yes I'm that kind of girl

Let me tell you that I like my lovin' just as much as any woman
But I'm drawin' the line
A little sensitivity always seems to get to me every time
I'm a sucker for a love-sick fool
The kind that carries all your books in school
I'm getting tired of these one night stands
But if you're lookin' for a real romance

I'm that kind of girl, I'm that kind of girl
I ain't the woman in red, I ain't the girl next door
But if somewhere in the middle's what you're lookin' for
I'm that kind of girl, yes I'm that kind of girl

I'm that kind of girl, I'm that kind of girl
I ain't the woman in red, I ain't the girl next door
But if somewhere in the middle's what you're lookin' for
I'm that kind of girl, yes I'm that kind of girl

I'm that kind of girl, oh whoa
I'm that kind of girl, oh whoa

Overall Meaning

In "I'm That Kind of Girl," Patty Loveless sings about a man outside her window, howling like an alley cat and asking her to meet him in the parking lot. Loveless says that while she likes love as much as any woman, she's tired of one night stands and wants a real romance. She admits to being a sucker for a love-sick fool, the kind who carries all her books in school. She positions herself as somewhere in the middle, not the girl next door or the woman in red, but that kind of girl.

The song showcases Loveless's confidence and self-awareness. She knows what she wants and what she doesn't want, and she's not afraid to say it. She's not willing to settle for less than a real romance and a man who exhibits a little sensitivity. She's not going to play games or try to be someone she's not.

In many ways, "I'm That Kind of Girl" is an anthem for women who are tired of one night stands and frivolous relationships. Loveless's lyrics offer a reminder that not all women are looking for the same thing, and it's important for men to understand that. The song is a celebration of self-awareness, self-respect, and confidence.

Notice on this song how there are NO backing vocals. This song truly showcased Patty's vocal abilities, ones that she held up even after her surgery. That right there is a true vocalist. We love Patty Loveless!

This is one of her best songs.... inflections in her voice speak volumes. She should have been showcased the way Reba, Dolly, Loretta, etc etc were. She certainly deserves it.
