In the 90's Smyth wrote music for several movie soundtracks and was nominated for a Grammy and an Academy award for her song "Look What Love Has Done" from the 1994 Arnold Schwarzenegger movie "Junior".
She dated fellow New York musician Richard Hell (lead singer of Television and Richard Hell and the Voidoids) for two years, and they had a child together. Smyth married professional tennis player John McEnroe in 1997.

It's your heart that you betray
Feeding on your hungry eyes
I bet you're not so civilized
Well, isn't love primitive
A wild gift that you want to give
Break out of captivity
Love is the kill
You're heart's still wild
Shooting at the walls of heartache bang, bang
I am the warrior
Well, I am the warrior
And heart to heart you'll win
If you survive, the warrior, the warrior
You talk, talk, talk to me
You're eyes touch me physically
Stay with me, we'll take the night
As passion takes another bite
Oh, who's the hunter, who's the game
I feel the beat call your name
I hold you close in victory
I don't want to tame your animal style
You won't be caged
In the call of the wild
Shooting at the walls of heartache bang, bang
I am the warrior
Well, I am the warrior
And heart to heart you'll win
If you survive, the warrior, the warrior
I am the warrior
Shooting at the walls of heartache (shooting at the walls of heartache)
The warrior
I am the warrior
And heart to heart you'll win
Heart to heart you'll win
If you survive, the warrior, the warrior
Shooting at the walls of heartache
I am the warrior
Yes, I am the warrior
And victory is mine
Shooting at the walls of heartache
I am the warrior
Shooting at the walls of heartache bang, bang
I am the warrior
The lyrics of Patty Smyth's "The Warrior" depicts someone who is wild and untamed and is looking for someone to match their energy, someone who will not try to tame them. The song starts with the idea that the singer is running away from something or someone, but in truth, it is their heart that they are betraying. They are passionate and hungry for love, and their wild spirit is evident in their eyes; they are not civilized.
The singer then speaks of the nature of love, how it is primitive and wild, but it is a gift that one must give. They urge the person they are addressing to break free of their captivity and follow them into the jungle of love, where they can be wild and free. They then state that love is a kill, and even though their heart is wild, it is not a bad thing. Shooting at the walls of heartache, the singer claims that they are the warrior; they are fierce, strong, and will fight for love. They urge the other person to fight with them, and if they survive, they will be victorious.
In the second verse, the singer addresses the other person who has been talking to them. They acknowledge the other person's physical charm and how they are affected by it. They urge them to stay with them and take the night. They question who the hunter and who the game is, and they feel the beat of the music call the other person's name. They hold the other person close in victory and claim that they do not want to cage their wild animal style. The song ends with a repetition of the chorus and the singer claiming victory over heartache.
