I am Paul and my wife was Paula. We were married on Sept. 18, 1971. Paula died on January 17, 2021, eight months before our 50th anniversary from complication of Multiple Sclerosis. "Hey Paula" was one of our favorite songs and invariably, whenever we were introduced to new friends, this song would be their first association with Paula and myself. We had a fairy tail romance for five decades in spite of the MS because Paula had a magical personality full of joy, love, humor, optimism, and hope. She was a high school teacher beloved by all of her students who invited her to every reunion, wedding, graduation, and banquet. We had true love. Moreover she was truly loved by everyone who knew her and we all miss her and will love her in our hearts and souls forever.

I love this song so much and pretty much all oldies from the 50’s and 60’s. I’m 29 years old but my dad played me this and other old songs. They always resonated with me on a deep level as if I was not a 90’s kid but a teenager in the time of this music. I feel it with every fiber of my being and hear it with more than my ears. I also enjoy classic movies, even black and white. I’m an old soul and I love that God made me this way.

OMG—the memories from ‘63 and the rest of the ‘60s when my uncle (and, later, my sister and I) would play this genuine gem over and over off Paul & Paula’s original Philips LP, Songs For Young Lovers, on my monaural record player! It indeed evokes a time of great innocence (I was almost 4 when “Hey Paula” hit the top of the Billboard charts). Our uncle (rest in aloha!) would’ve been 75 in 2 weeks (September 12).

He was 22 when this classic love ballad made that year that much more memorable in the pop music scene, now just over 60 years ago! #1 for the first week ending Feb. 9, 1963, and for 3 consecutive weeks. Also #1 on the R&B chart. #1 on the Canadian CHUM chart for 3 consecutive weeks. One of the year's highlight songs. "Paula" was Jill Jackson, the niece of the owner of the boarding house where Ray lived. Ray wrote the song, taking inspiration from Annette Funicello's 1959 hit, "Tall Paul" her highest-charting hit, at #7. The song was again popularized in the movie, "Animal House" (1978), set in 1962/63 when Boon (Peter Riegert) and Katy (Karen Allen) sang it to each other while high. I just heard that "Paul" passed away and that his name was Ray Hildebrand. This song came out when I was 5 years old. It was recorded here in Fort Worth so it was a really big deal to us. It makes me remember my brother driving around in his 1956 Buick convertible with his arm around his girlfriend while this song played on the radio. (It was their song.) I was the little sister in the back seat ruining the moment by singing along. R.I.P. to Ray.

There are so many moving responses to this song here that anything I write will be banal. But just to say that the record marked the beginning of this twelve year-old boy's dream of romance. Such innocence. This was what I thought love really was. Sixty years later, after my first wife died of cancer after eighteen years' marriage, and my second left me after seventeen years, I so easily relate to the emotions expressed here, and send you all my love indeed. No-one shares exactly the same feelings, but many can experience some of them.

Wonderful song. Heard it first as a young lad working a part time job after school in a local supermarket. I worked in the Produce Dept, and two older ladies tray packed vegetables for display. My Grandma and Grandad danced and sang this to each other, he sang hey Pamela to her instead of Paula. My Grandad passed away this year after losing my Grandma 13 years previous, he never got over her or enjoyed much after her passing but I’m glad they are both back together once again now 😢. It's funny when he said they only made about 2%. So many 50's artists were screwed back then, especially the younger ones.
