Once In A While
Paul & The Tall Trees Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Once in royal David's city
Stood a lowly cattle-shed
Where a mother laid her baby
In a manger for His bed
Mary was that mother mild
Jesus Christ her little child

He came down to earth from heaven
Who is God and Lord of all
And His shelter was a stable
And His cradle was a stall
With the poor, and mean, and lowly
Lived on earth our Savior holy

Jesus is our childhood's pattern
Day by day like us He grew
He was little, weak, and helpless
Tears and smiles, like us, He knew
And He feeleth for our sadness
And He shareth in our gladness

And our eyes at last shall see Him
Through His own redeeming love
For that Child so dear and gentle
Is our Lord in heav'n above

And He leads His children on
To the place where He is gone

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Once in a While" by Paul & The Tall Trees allude to the birth of Jesus Christ in Bethlehem, as recorded in the Bible. The first verse describes the humble surroundings of his birth, where he was placed in a manger instead of a proper bed. Mary, the mother of Jesus, is described as "mild" - a term that can be interpreted to mean gentle or meek. The chorus of the song emphasizes the religious significance of Jesus' birth - he is described as God and Lord of all, who came down to earth to live among humans.

Should have 3 million views. Either underrated or undiscovered. In that case I shall keep this to myself, like a little gold nugget. And it shall be my pet. And I shall name it Gem.
