"People are generally frightened by diversity", states Luthier, Composer, and Multi-Instrumentalist Paul Adams. "It does have its commercial setbacks, but it's natural for me. Having been a student of Ethnomusicology, I love the idea of unity within diversity, so I try to encompass many cultures and traditions in music." Adams also worked as an instrument maker having made guitars for Daryl Hall, members of Stevie Wonders band and others. He also composed commercials for such companies as The Siemans Corporation, Subaru, Motorola, Caterpillar, Chrysler and others.
Adams has seven critically acclaimed albums, many of which were recorded using instruments he made himself.
Adams first album Various Waves was placed in the TOP FIVE of the year!
WONDER DANCING ON GLOBAL BOP was his second outing that TOWER RECORDS Pulse magazine called "a wonderful album with amazing scintillating fretwork" that encompassed Jazz, World Fusion, Flamenco, and Bluegrass.
His album THE PROPERTY OF WATERwas created with a sense of healing. It was composed with legendary synthesizer pioneer Laurie Spiegal's program for computer called The Music Mouse (All music commands are conducted with the Computer keypad and not synthesizer keyboard.). It's vehicle is meant to be a meditative journey, AND won the best album of the year award from WIND ANDWIRE Magazine in 1998.
A VIEW FROM THE PLAIN was Adams's “ode” to the vast open landscape of the prairie. It's fingerstyle guitar technique offers a very unique version of Pachelbels Canon done “cowboy style”.
Adams has also worked in the mental health field for over 24 years and is currently teaching Therapists, Physicians, and individuals how to use music for specific pathologies such as Anxiety, Addiction, Depression, and other illnesses.
Adams co produced a beautful album called FROM ENERGY TO STILLNESS by Ray Charles Trumpet soloist/arranger David Hoffman. "It's soulful, organic, and honest. It was recorded while Dave was on tour by sending digital tapes back and forth using Federal Express.
His album IN THE LAND WHERE I COME FROM was composed by integrating his Poetry, Mysticism, and a storyline about an imaginary place called Butterland “A very polyunsaturated and beautiful land where Butterlanders float freely on clouds of pillows and puffs.” Ray Charles Trumpet soloist David Hoffman offers a guest appearance. Kit Watkins from the bands Camel and Happy The Man also appears.
Paul's Holiday album THIS CHRISTMAS, was created utilizing some of the instruments he made such as Guitar and Dulcimer, along with Dobro and Mandolin. The Peoria Journal Star rated it with FIVE Stars.
Adams created a band called THE NEURONS with David Hoffman after David's long journey with The Ray Charles band ended. SMOOTH VIBES Magazine in Germany says "From time to time I find music which is unusual, unique and original. Not a copy of anything, a pathfinder and pioneer. Music that realizes new ideas, instruments or styles.. That's THE NEURONS."
Adams is a collector as well as a builder of musical instruments. His album FLUTE MEDITATIONS FOR DREAMING CLOUDS utilizes a vast collection of over twenty flutes Adams has collected through the years. It also integrated Gamalon Gongs from the Island of Bali. paul@pauladams.org
