Eyes Without A Face
Paul Anka Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm all out of hope
One more bad dream could bring a fall
When I'm far from home
Don't call me on the phone
To tell me you're alone
It's easy to deceive
It's easy to tease
But hard to get release

Les yeux sans visage
Eyes without a face
Les yeux sans visage
Eyes without a face
Les yeux sans visage
Eyes without a face
Got no human grace, your eyes without a face

I spend so much time
Believing all the lies
To keep the dream alive
Now it makes me sad
It makes me mad at truth
For loving what was you

Les yeux sans visage
Eyes without a face
Les yeux sans visage
Eyes without a face
Les yeux sans visage
Eyes without a face
Got no human grace, your eyes without a face

When you hear the music you make a dip
Into someone else's pocket then make a slip

Steal a car and go to Las Vegas oh, the gigolo pool
I'm on a bus on a psychedelic trip
Reading murder books tryin' to stay hip

I'm thinkin' of you, you're out there so
Say your prayers
Say your prayers
Say your prayers

Now I close my eyes
And I wonder why
I don't despise
Now all I can do
Is love what was once
So alive and new
But it's gone from your eyes
I'd better realize

Les yeux sans visage
Eyes without a face
Les yeux sans visage
Eyes without a face
Les yeux sans visage
Eyes without a face
Got no human grace, your eyes without a face

Such a human waste, your eyes without a face
And now it's getting worse

Overall Meaning

The song “Eyes Without a Face” by Paul Anka talks about the feeling of hopelessness and the difficulties of letting go of a past love. The lyrics suggest that the singer has lost all hope for a future with their love interest, and is afraid to dream because it could result in a devastating fall. The lyrics “It’s easy to deceive, it’s easy to tease, but hard to get release” suggest that the relationship was one-sided, and the singer was chasing after something that was never really there.

The refrain “Les yeux sans visage” which translates to “eyes without a face” in English, refers to the eyes of the singer’s former love interest. The singer describes these eyes as being a mirror image of their soul, as they have lost all humanity and grace. The lyrics suggest that the person of interest has transformed into something unrecognizable and inhuman, and the singer is struggling with the idea of letting go of what once was.

The second verse of the song depicts a psychedelic journey of sorts, where the singer is reading murder books and trying to stay hip. The singer is constantly thinking of their former love interest, and urges them to say their prayers. The final verse of the song suggests that the singer has come to accept that the relationship has ended and that they must move on, but that they will always look back and cherish the time they spent together.

Going down one of YT's rabbit holes tonight somehow brought me to Billy Idol's EWAF and it reawakened some long-forgotten memory of my teenage years, back when it was a minor hit in Holland. While re-familiarising myself with the lyrics, I found a link to this Paul Anka version. (I was fully expecting it to be a completely different song; one that just happened to share the same title). Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised when it turned out to be a cover of the BI original; Paul "easy listened" the s#!t out of it, and quite successfully I might add!
Oh, how I love finding little gems like these every now and then! It really makes my day. ✌🏼☮️

@LiaZaripova

I honestly didnt know that original song wasnt this. I love this cover so much.
