My Way
Paul Anka (duet with Frank Sinatra) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

So now the end is near
And so I face the final curtain
My friend I'll say it clear
I'll state my case of which I'm certain
I've lived a life that's full
I traveled each and every highway
And more much more than this
I did it my way.

Regrets, I've had a few
But then again too few to mention
I did what I had to do
And saw it through without exception
I planned each chartered course
Each careful step alone the by way
And more much more than this
I did it my way.

Yes there were times I'm sure you knew
When I bit off more than I could chew
But through it all when there was doubt
I ate it up and spit it out
I face it all and I stood tall
And did it my way.

I've loved, I've laughed and cried
I've had my fill my share of loosing
And the now as tears subside
I find it all so amusing
To think I did all that and my I say
Not in a shy way
Oh no, oh no not me
I did it my way.

For what is a man what has he got
If not himself then he has not
To say the things he truly feels
And not the words of one who kneels
The record shows I took the blows
And did it my way

The record shows I took the blows
And did it my way.

Overall Meaning

The song "My Way," performed initially by Frank Sinatra, was deeply personal and reflective, and this Paul Anka feat. Bon Jovi cover of the classic tune maintains the same level of reflection but injects it with a note of defiance. The first verse speaks of the end being near, the final curtain that we all must face at the end of our lives. The singer has lived a full life and has traveled every path that they wanted to. The refrain "I did it my way" emphasizes the personal agency involved in every decision the singer's ever made throughout the course of their life.

The second verse talks about how regrets have been few and far between, and even though there were times when the singer bit off more than they could chew, they persevered and saw things through to their logical conclusion without fail. Here, the singer emphasizes their thorough planning process, taking each step carefully, but ultimately owning their decisions and the consequences that come with them. Despite the low points in their life, the singer has loved and lived well, and as they come to the end of their life, they can look back on what they've accomplished and see the humor in it all.

The final verse is perhaps the most powerful, as the singer questions what a man really is if he can't stand behind their thoughts and emotions without reservation. So many people cave under societal pressure, doing and saying what's expected of them rather than speaking their real feelings. But the singer of the song has taken the blows that come with voicing one's real opinions and feelings and did it their way, and the record shows this all too well. In the end, the singer ends their life exactly as they started it- with full ownership of their life experience, unique to them and no one else.

I saw Paul Anka in Vegas many years ago. He pulled me out of my seat and sang to me. It was a moment I'll always treasure.

I’m just turned 64 remembering hearing this for the first time at 12 yrs old........on a transistor radio about the size of a deck of cards! Had it under my pillow waiting for KOMA AM radio stations to go full power! Love the old R&B tunes back then!
