Another Chance
Paul Banks Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Gun fire explosion, I want that guarantee
Sometimes I think I coexist with me.
And one side makes me old
And one side makes me struggle,
I was on the nightshift, I said I’ll never run a fight like this.

In the meantime, I’m gonna shut it tight like a briefcase.
‘cause in my moon mine it’s a summer night and I watch it break.

Change my full conclusion when I was 17,
Sometimes I feel diminished by routine.
It’s one night, two years cold, next she’s making me doubles,
I’m drinking moonshine, because I’ve had enough of starlight.

In the meantime, I’m gonna shut it tight like a briefcase.
‘cause in my moon mine it’s a summer night and I watch it break.

So just sit back, I don’t mind
See how long I’ve been chased.
Don’t you see I have to pay for that?
I paid for that, I paid for that.
And now you’ll pay me back.

Death will come by ocean, I want that guarantee.
Sometimes I think I’m offering a dream.

In the meantime, I’m gonna shut it tight like my briefcase.
‘cause in my moon mine it’s a summer night and I watch it break.

So just sit back, I don’t mind
See how long I’ve been chased.
Don’t you see I have to pay for that?
I paid for that, I paid for that.
And now you’ll pay me back.
I paid for that, in very many steps.
I paid for that, now you’ll pay me back,

Now you’ll pay me back, now you’ll pay me back,
Now you’ll pay me back, now you’ll pay me back

Overall Meaning

The song "Another Chance" by Paul Banks is a hauntingly introspective song about the internal struggles that one faces in order to carve out their own identity in the world. The lyrics speak of the personal conflict that arises when one side of ourselves wants to hold on to the safe and familiar while the other side craves the adventure and risk that life has to offer. The opening line "Gunfire explosion, I want that guarantee" sets the tone for the song, evoking a sense of desperation for something more exciting than the mundane routine of daily life.

The verse "Change my full conclusion when I was 17" suggests a turning point in the singer's life, a moment of clarity or realization that they need to break free from their previous way of living. The line "Sometimes I feel diminished by routine" speaks to the ennui and boredom that can come from living the same routine day after day. The repetition of the phrase "I paid for that" in the final verse implies that the singer has made choices that cost them dearly, but they believe that they will be repaid in some way in the future.

Overall, "Another Chance" is a deeply introspective song that speaks to the personal conflicts that arise when we try to balance our desire for safety and routine with our longing for adventure and risk.

I just learned the ending on guitar! I’m trying to see if there’s any difference in the way I play it and the way he or others play it. I did the baseline on the D string, and plucked the open G and B with my first and middle finger for the open strings ringing behind the melody. Though you can hear that in the bass note he does a kind of quick grace note for each stroke with the thumb I think? Idk I just realize you may have even done it on a totally different instrument haha but if you’d like would you mind talking about your approach to performing it?
