Stage Fright
Paul Butterfield & Rick Danko Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Now deep in the heart of a lonely kid
Who suffered so much for what he did
They gave this ploughboy his fortune and fame
Since that day he ain't been the same

See the man with the stage fright
Just standin' up there to give it all his might
And he got caught in the spotlight
But when we get to the end
He wants to start all over again

I've got fire water right on my breath
And the doctor warned me I might catch a death
Said, you can make it in your disguise
Just never show the fear that's in your eyes

See the man with the stage fright
Just standin' up there to give it all his might
He got caught in the spotlight
But when we get to the end
He wants to start all over again

Now if he says that he's afraid
Take him at his word
And for the price that the poor boy has paid
He gets to sing just like a bird, oh, ooh ooh ooh

Your brow is sweatin' and your mouth gets dry
Fancy people go driftin' by
The moment of truth is right at hand
Just one more nightmare you can stand

See the man with the stage fright
Just standin' up there to give it all his might
And he got caught in the spotlight
But when we get to the end
He wants to start all over again

You wanna try it once again
Please don't make him stop

Let him take it from the top
Let him start all over again

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Paul Butterfield and Rick Danko's "Stage Fright" talks about the struggles of a performer who suffers from stage fright. The song's title refers to a feeling of fear or anxiety that an artist may experience before performing. The lyrics express the feeling of a young artist who was given fame and fortune, but it changed him. The opening lines convey the message of an artist who feels isolated and alone. Despite the recognition and appreciation he receives, he still feels lost and scared.

The artists then talk about the doctor's warning about the dangers of drinking too much alcohol. The songwriter uses the image of "fire water" on his breath to explain the artist's addiction. The message is that the artist is medicating himself to maintain his composure on stage. The lyrics highlight the importance of not showing fear, and the difficulty of keeping up the facade. At the end of the performance, the artist wants another chance to start over again.

The main takeaways from the song are the struggles that come with fame and the importance of overcoming stage fright. The songwriters make it clear that stage fright is a common issue among artists, and it can be managed with practice and experience. The song ends on a hopeful note, as the artist wants to start again, signifying that despite the difficulties, he is not willing to give up on his passion.

What I love about Danko, besides everything, is he has a truly original vocal style, he's like a jazzman, you'll never hear it the same twice. Miss him so.

I always enjoy watching Rick danko. He just seems to have so much fun up there on stage. Heck he could’ve made a career out of dancing. He just seems to have so much energy, I’d be that way too lol
