It's not warm when she's away.
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
And she's always gone too long anytime she goes away.
Wonder this time where she's gone,
Wonder if she's gone to stay
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
And I know, I know, I know, I know, I know,
I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know,
I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know,
I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know
Hey, I ought to leave the young thing alone,
But ain't no sunshine when she's gone, only darkness everyday.
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone,
And this house just ain't no home anytime she goes away.
Anytime she goes away.
Anytime she goes away.
Anytime she goes away.
Anytime she goes away.
The lyrics to Paul Carrack's "Ain't No Sunshine" describe the overwhelming feeling of emptiness and darkness that accompanies the absence of a loved one. The repeated refrain of "Ain't no sunshine when she's gone" emphasizes the powerlessness and despair felt when the one who brings light and warmth to life is absent. Even though the singer knows he should let go of his obsession with this "young thing," he cannot escape the emptiness that comes when she goes away.
The imagery of a house that feels like no home when she is gone highlights the loneliness and isolation that comes when someone who feels like home is not there. The singer, constantly wondering where she is and if she will return, is tormented and unable to find peace. The repetition of "I know" suggests that the singer is aware of the futility of holding onto someone who is not meant to stay, yet he cannot help but cling to the hope that she might return.
Overall, the lyrics to "Ain't No Sunshine" offer a poignant portrayal of the pain and emptiness that comes with the absence of a loved one. The repetition of the refrain and the constant wondering of where she is and if she will return evoke a sense of hopelessness and despair that is relatable to anyone who has experienced the loss of someone dear.
