Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying
Paul Carrack Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don't let the sun catch you cryin'
The night's the time for all your tears
Your heart may be broken tonight
But tomorrow in the morning light
Don't let the sun catch you cryin'

The night-time shadows disappear
And with them go all your tears
For the morning will bring joy
For every girl and boy
So don't let the sun catch you cryin'

We know that cryin's not a bad thing
But stop your cryin' when the birds sing

It may be hard to discover
That you've been left for another
But don't forget that love's a game
And it can always come again
Oh don't let the sun catch you cryin'

Don't let the sun catch you cryin', oh no
Oh, oh, oh

Overall Meaning

The song "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying" by Paul Carrack is a soothing ballad that urges people to not be too upset and cry during the night, but to wait for the morning light to bring renewed hope and joy. The song speaks to anyone who has experienced heartbreak, reminding them that their tears will be dried by the coming dawn. The nighttime shadows are transformed by daylight which gives life to the beauty within the world. The morning brings with it the promise of a new day, a new chance to find love, and a new opportunity to be happy.

The lyrics reveal that crying is not a bad thing, but it's essential to stop crying when the birds begin to sing. This line suggests that life goes on, and people must move on from their suffering. Paul Carrack realizes that getting over someone you love can be tough. Still, he encourages people to have faith that they'll find love again, and not to let the pain consume them. Perhaps the most significant message in the song is the reminder that life is a game, and while people may face heartbreak, there's always a chance for love to come again.

Wow an incredible jazz cover of a 1960s song! Paul's voice is as smooth as silk. The music and word flow like a gentle stream rippling over river rocks.
