As Young As You'll Ever Be
Paul Cauthen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ain't the highest you'll ever climb
It's the farthest you'll ever see
You're as young as you'll ever be
You're as young as you'll ever be

Might be the ripest on the farm
Might be the brightest bulb in the barn
Well there's more seeds left to sow
Such little time to call your own
Such little time

My old man was wild as me
Tried to teach me better 'round twenty-three
Where were you when I was sixteen and all alone?
You were high as you'd ever flown

Well you fight those demons 'til the end
They'll come screamin' against the wind
You fight those demons 'til the end
They'll come screamin' again and again
Again and again

Ain't the highest you'll ever climb
But it's the farthest you'll ever see
You're as young as you'll ever be

You're as young as you'll ever be
You're as young as you'll ever be

Overall Meaning

In Paul Cauthen's song "As Young as You'll Ever Be," the lyrics are a reflection on age and the fleeting nature of time. The chorus repeats the line "You're as young as you'll ever be," emphasizing the notion that youth is a temporary state and that every moment should be cherished. The song encourages listeners to live life to the fullest and not take their time for granted.

The lyrics also touch upon the idea of missed opportunities and regret. The lines "Where were you when I was sixteen and all alone? You were high as you'd ever flown" suggest that the singer's father was absent or struggling with their own demons during a crucial time in the singer's life. The lyrics express a sense of longing and a desire to make up for lost time.

The verses of the song describe the realities of life and the kind of pressure one may face. The lines "Might be the ripest on the farm, Might be the brightest bulb in the barn" are a nod to the competitive nature of society, where being successful is often glorified. However, the following lines, "Well, there's more seeds left to sow, Such little time to call your own," suggest that there is always more to achieve and time is limited, so one should make the most of the present moment.

This is unbelievably good. So layered and dynamic! This guy is like fat Elvis ate all of the highwaymen. Great time to be alive in Texas

I am so glad I decided to listen to all of Paul's albums. So much talent on all of these songs. havent been disappointed by a single one.
Paul's voice is dynamic from a chilling camber to soulful breathy, and then when he throws the funky styling and just has fun with it such energy and presence in everything he does.
