Careless Whisper
Paul Kim Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(by George Michael)

I Feel So Unsure
As i take your hand
And lead you to the dance floor
As the music dies
Something in your eyes
Calls to mind a silver screen
And all its sad goodbyes

[Chorus]

I'm never gonna dance again
Guilty feet have got no rhythm
Though it's easy to pretend
I know you're not a fool
I should have known better than to cheat a friend
And waste a chance that i've been given
So i'm never gonna dance again
The way i danced with you

Time can never mend
The careless whisper of a good friend
To the heart and mind
Ignorance is kind
There's no comfort in the truth
Pain is all you'll find

[Chorus]

Tonight the music seems so loud
I wish that we could lose this crowd
Maybe it's better this way
We'd hurt each other with the things we want to say
We could have been so good together
We could have lived this dance forever
But now who's gonna dance with me
Please stay

[Chorus]

Now that you've gone
Now that you've gone
Now that you've gone

Was what i did so wrong
So wrong that you had to leave me alone

Overall Meaning

The song "Careless Whisper" was written by George Michael and released in 1984. Paul Kim’s version of the song to some extent preserves the story the original tells. The song’s pace is slow and melodious, suggesting a sense of heartbreak and sadness. The lyrics start with uncertainty as the singer leads his partner to the dance floor while the music dies. The first verse embodies the idea of the silver screen and depicts the sad goodbyes typical of it. The chorus, "I'm never gonna dance again/ Guilty feet have got no rhythm/ Though it's easy to pretend/ I know you're not a fool/ I should have known better than to cheat a friend/ And waste a chance that I've been given/ So I'm never gonna dance again/ The way I danced with you," reveals the underlying theme of Heartbreak and guilt. The singer seems to be confessing to some wrongdoing, and he realizes he has wasted a chance, given to him for taking his partner for granted.

In the second verse, George Michael explores the theme of regret that comes with hurting someone once close to your heart. The careless whisper of the good friend may have sounded insignificant at the moment, but it has caused a lot of pain now that things have gone south. The chorus repeats, and then we have the third verse. In this verse, the singer is contemplating the crowds around them and realizing that it is better that they are gone. They could have said hurtful things, and it would have been better if they were not close enough to do it. The song concludes with the chorus, and the sound of sadness is still prevalent.

I love his voice. It's very soothing to the ears. I think that being out there without shoes is weird? Anyways, I enjoyed listening😙😚

I remember this guy! He was actually the reason I discovered and fell in love with the Wham!/George Michael song, given that I was born a few years after it had come out.

sportsqueen

I'm sorry but I loved Paul and his voice. It's so soothing and calming, especially singing this song. Too bad he didn't make it futher he could've been someone to watch out for.

1. Minus the pitch problems, Paul really did have one of the best male voices. He should have stayed at least another week or two. 2. Ryan is MAD short!!(LOL)

God, he was so darn cute! I wish he got further. He deserved to be there more than Sanjaya.

i remember this guy when he actually was in american idol

I didn't watch this part, but again. i'm impressed with ryan's sympathy for contestants, who especially were humiliated by simon for their weird habbits. ryan did that kind of sympathetic action when season5 winner taylor fell on the floor (as a dancing move lol), and simon put him to shame mocking that move. of course, ryan's action was supposed to be fun, but those things made me think that he's quite warm in heart. he seems a really good show host who deals well with those young people.

He struggles a bit and it bordered on bad lounge singing... He’s an R&B singer and should have gone all the way with it...

I wish the Paul Kim now would redo this song. I don't care what others have to say, I like Paul's voice for this song. It just needed improvement

ez2hotwire

Simon was just being honest. Copying someone with a voice like George Michael was an incredibly bad idea! I will admit Paul does has an awesome voice, just not for that song.
