Band on the Run
Paul McCarney and Wings Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Stuck inside these four walls
Sent inside forever
Never seeing no one
Nice again like you
Mama you, mama you

If I ever get out of here
Thought of giving it all away
To a registered charity
All I need is a pint a day
If I ever get outta here
If we ever get out of here

Well, the rain exploded with a mighty crash
As we fell into the sun
And the first one said to the second one there
I hope you're having fun

Band on the run, band on the run
And the jailer man and sailor Sam
Were searching every one
For the band on the run
Band on the run
For the band on the run
Band on the run

Well, the undertaker drew a heavy sigh
Seeing no one else had come
And a bell was ringing in the village square
For the rabbits on the run

Band on the run
Band on the run
And the jailer man and sailor Sam
Were searching every one
For the band on the run
Band on the run

Yeah, the band on the run
The band on the run
Band on the run, hey
Band on the run

Well, the night was falling as the desert world
Began to settle down
In the town they're searching for us everywhere
But we never will be found

Band on the run
Band on the run
And the county judge who held a grudge
Will search for evermore
For the band on the run
The band on the run

Band on the run, yeah
Band on the run, yeah

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Paul McCartney and Wings' song "Band on the Run" appear to be about a group of people who are trapped in a deteriorating environment or situation, which they are trying to escape. The opening lines speak to this feeling of entrapment, being "Stuck inside these four walls" and "Sent inside forever." The singer's longing for connection and the outside world is evident in the line "Never seeing no one, nice again like you, Mama you, Mama you."

The following verse speaks to the singer's desire to escape their current living situation, with the lines "If I ever get out of here, thought of giving it all away, to a registered charity." The desire for freedom and a different way of life is reflected in the repeated chorus, which refers to the group as the "band on the run," while they are chased by the "jailer man and sailor Sam" and the "county judge who held a grudge."

The final verse, however, introduces a sense of finality to the song, with the image of the bell ringing for "the rabbits on the run" and the singer noting that "we never will be found." Despite the upbeat and almost playful tone of the chorus, this verse conveys a sense of anxiety and uncertainty, as if the band members are aware that their escape may be temporary and that they might ultimately succumb to their pursuers.

Also in the 70s a lot of people were doing this gorgeous thing with music where a song would have several “movements” like this, Led Zeppelin, Heart, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd (especially the Sid days), all did great stuff like this. Paul McCartney’s song here is legendary though.

The first song was the best. He should have finished it and ditched the other two.
