I would LOVE to ask him this question. "Dear Paul, ...".
I don't talk about the long fractured songs like Uncle Albert (though it's obviously a cousin concept), but about his way to add little surprises all along the tracks.
Many groups add little things here and there all along their songs. They make crescendos, and add a guitar, a melody, that's common.
But Paul...
Take The Pipes of Peace, the intro leads to something else (this modulation!), and when you "get it", there's a kind of choir, then parade music, then you get Indian percs, return of the intro, before a.... strings outro!
More "seriously", take ANY song from Chaos and Creation, like the end of How Kind of You (almost Wyattian), they're all full of little mutations. When I listen to this album I'm always in awe...
This man is a GENIUS in adding micro melodies everywhere, changing colors, he's a master in "perpetual mutation".
I think it's one of his secrets. I wonder if he told about (interview?) this aspect of his work somewhere.
Also, I would love to get a list of your good examples of this aspect: what are great McCartney songs that "always change" - a source of pleasure, right?
