We All Stand Together
Paul McCartney Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Win or lose, sink or swim
One thing is certain we'll never give in
Side by side, hand in hand
We all stand together

Play the game, fight the fight
But what's the point on a beautiful night?
Arm in arm, hand in hand
We all stand together

Keeping us warm in the night
La la la la
Walk in the night
You'll get it right

Win or lose, sink or swim
One thing is certain we'll never give in

Side by side, hand in hand
We all stand together

Overall Meaning

"We All Stand Together" is a song written by Paul McCartney and is featured in the animated short film Rupert and the Frog Song. This song is an allegory for the importance of unity and togetherness that is to be maintained during hardships and in the face of opposition. With lines like "win or lose, sink or swim, one thing is certain we'll never give in," McCartney conveys a message of solidarity in the face of challenges. The song encourages listeners to come together, especially on beautiful and peaceful nights, and to stand up together.

Throughout the song, McCartney stresses the importance of solidarity and collective action, as unity is the only way to face difficulties. When McCartney sings that "we all stand together," the message is a reminder that we all need to be there for each other, regardless of our differences or backgrounds. These lyrics are a call to action, urging everyone to work together for the greater good, no matter the circumstances.

The song has a lullaby quality to it and is often interpreted as a children's song, but in its true essence, it is a message of unity that is applicable to everyone, regardless of age. The theme of togetherness and unity is universal and remains as relevant today as it was when the song was first released.

Written in 1984, this gem only amplifies the genius of Paul McCartney. His melodies are just breathtaking.

We All Stand Together" is from the animated film Rupert and the Frog Song and reached number three in the UK Singles Chart in 1984.

The "Frog Chorus" backing on the song was provided by The King's Singers and the choir of St Paul's Cathedral.

The B-side of the single contains a "Humming Version" of the song performed by the Finchley Frogettes.

The song re-entered the UK Singles Chart in 1985, one of three hits to do so that had originally charted in December 1984. ("Do They Know It's Christmas?" by Band Aid and "Last Christmas" by Wham! were the other two.)
