Julia

Half of what I say is meaningless
But I say it just to reach you, Julia

Julia, Julia
Ocean child calls me
So I sing the song of love, Julia

Julia
Seashell eyes, windy smile calls me
So I sing the song of love
Julia

Her hair of floating sky is shimmering
Glimmering in the sun

Julia, Julia
Morning moon touch me
So I sing the song of love
Julia

When I cannot sing my heart
I can only speak my mind
Julia

Julia
Sleeping sand, silent cloud touch me
So I sing the song of love
Julia

Calls me

So I sing the song of love for Julia
Julia, Julia

Overall Meaning

The song "Julia" by John Lennon is a popular song that was featured on his first solo album, "John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band" in 1970. It is a beautiful song written as a tribute to the most influential woman in his life, his mother, Julia Lennon, who died tragically in 1958 when John was just 17 years old. The lyrics reveal John's admiration and love for his mother and his deep longing for her. The song is slow-paced and uses a simple acoustic guitar with a relaxing tune that is reminiscent of the ocean waves.

The first stanza of the song reveals that John is aware of the futility of his words, but he still utters them just to communicate with his mother, even though any language is meaningless. The chorus is a direct reference to his mother, whom he affectionately calls "Julia," and how he sings of his love for her. The second stanza describes Julia's beauty, particularly her seashell eyes, with a windy smile that he adores. The third stanza is an ode to Julia's hair, which is compared to the floating sky, shimmering in the sun. Finally, the last stanza reveals John's emotional turmoil at not being able to connect with his mother, except through his music, and how he sings the song of love for Julia.

This is fantastic, Andrew. I think I’ve read the same interview in a book called John Lennon: My Brother which was written by Julia Baird in 1989. I seem to remember that Paul seemed to be really relaxed and jokey with Julia. I wish he’d do more interviews with friends and family as he seems to let his guard down a bit and steers away from his usual stories. A case in point would be the interview he did with Sean Lennon when he talks about the first time he saw John in a chip shop.

I’ll get this ordered. Thanks Andrew😊👍🏻
