One of the most celebrated artists of the twentieth century, Simon's career has spanned six decades. Born in New Jersey, Simon grew up in the borough of Queens in New York City and developed an interest in rock music in his teens.

He began performing with his schoolfriend Art Garfunkel in 1956; together the two came to prominence in the 1960s as Simon & Garfunkel. The duo's blend of folk and rock music in hits like "The Sound of Silence", "Mrs. Robinson", "America", and "The Boxer" served as a soundtrack to the counterculture movement. Their career together peaked with their last album, Bridge over Troubled Water (1970), at one point the best-selling album of all time. Throughout his subsequent solo career, Simon has continued to explore an eclectic mixture of genres, including gospel, reggae, soul, and more. His celebrated 1970s output—comprising Paul Simon (1972), There Goes Rhymin' Simon (1973), and Still Crazy After All These Years (1975)—kept him in the public spotlight and saw critical and commercial acclaim, spawning the hits "Mother and Child Reunion", "Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard", and "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover".

Across his life, Simon has intermittently reunited with Garfunkel for several tours, including the famed Concert in Central Park. The widely lauded Graceland (1986) became Simon's biggest album of his career, melding his rock sound with worldbeat flavors; its single "You Can Call Me Al" became one of Simon's top hits. A sequel of sorts, The Rhythm of the Saints (1990), preceded his own successful Concert in the Park, attended by a half-million fans. That decade, Simon focused his energies on a Broadway musical The Capeman (1997), which was poorly received. In the first quarter of the next century, Simon continued to record and tour; his later albums, such as You're the One (2000), So Beautiful or So What (2011), and Stranger to Stranger (2016), have introduced him to new generations. He retired from touring in 2018. His most recent work, Seven Psalms, will see release in May 2023.

Simon is among the most acclaimed musicians and songwriters in popular music, and one of the world's best-selling music artists, both for his solo work and with Garfunkel. He is a two-time inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and has been the recipient of sixteen Grammy Awards, including three for Album of the Year. Two of his works, Sounds of Silence and Graceland, have seen induction into National Recording Registry for their cultural significance, and in 2007, the Library of Congress crowned him the inaugural winner of the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. He is a co-founder of the Children's Health Fund, a nonprofit that provides medical care to children.

In an in-depth interview reprinted in American Songwriter, Simon discusses the craft of songwriting with music journalist Tom Moon. In the interview, Simon explains the basic themes in his songwriting: love, family and social commentary (as well as the overarching messages of religion, spirituality and God in his lyrics). Simon explains the process of how he goes about writing songs in the interview: "The music always precedes the words. The words often come from the sound of the music and eventually evolve into coherent thoughts. Or incoherent thoughts. Rhythm plays a crucial part in the lyric-making as well. It's like a puzzle to find the right words to express what the music is saying."

Just watched a video with Howard Stern interviewing Paul Simon and learned that the "drums" in this song are not drums at all, but hands slapping guitar cases and knees, fed through a recording machine (a Nagra) that caused a "slap-back" effect. It was not done intentionally, but Paul and Artie heard it and were blown away by it. The genius of these guys was that they created this brilliant song from a chance sound effect. Amazing.

Last night I had to take my dad to the ER at 12:30 a.m. After getting checked in, at about 2 a.m. his nurse Emily started singing this song outside of our room, quite well I might add. My Mom and her sister, my Aunt Patty (Rip) LOVED Simon And Garfunkel. Their taste in music eventually got passed down to me. I'm 36 now. Simon and Garfunkel are def in my top 10. However, I always felt as though Art Garfunkel never got as much appreciation and recognition as Paul. I personally LOVE Art's voice much more than Paul's. It's so unique, powerful and it's very rare to find a man who can sing that high and sound like an angel. That being said, I must say, their voices do harmonize together beautifully! There are no other artists that could duet together and sound as beautiful as Simon And Garfunkel.

I first heard this song on Fire Support Base Flashner in March 1970. It was being introduced as a new song on, Armed Forces Radio Vietnam. About a minute or so into the song we started to get hit by mortars and rocket fire and all hell broke loose. I think it was years later that I heard the whole song without interruptions. I was not yet 3 yrs old when this song came out and I constantly sang it at the top of my little lungs while shaking my tambourine and my heaping confidence daily, without a clue as to what the heck they were talking about.

It is O.K now. My Wife passed away in Her sleep at age 62 without any warning, in fact I did not know anything was wrong until I happened to wake up at 3:00 am to use the restroom, when I got back I thought She was asleep and left the light on, not unusual for Her, She would often read in bed till 1 or 2 AM.I noticed that She was not snoring that was My first clue something was not right, I checked Her breathing, She wasn't so I called 911 and started cpr Paramedics were only 3 min away they were not able to revive Her Later They told Me that She had probably been gone from about 12:30 or 1:00 Am. My consolation in all of this was that the last words that She heard from Me was " Good night honey I love You I'll see You in the morning" There was no auto[psy the Medical Examiner classified the death as "natural causes" and did not order a autopsy. In fact the paramedics that responded knew both of us as We had both worked for the County Hospital , Me for 22 years Her for 13. Hope that covers it for You. Robert, You are right, as I said before I worked in a level 1 trauma hospital for 22 years and have seen much suffering during those years both victim and Family. I just did not see the blessing at first ( shock ) I have had some time to reflect on the situation and realized how much worse it could have been.. I am a practicing catholic My whole life and firmly believe that We will be reunited someday, I was gently reminded of that fact by another You-Tuber ( organpipe 8 ) Who has a beautiful ministry of Hymns somewhere around 900 titles I have been listening to Him for about 5 years and His beautiful music got Me through the worst of that time , He in fact inspired Me to take organ lessons and have been doing so for 3 years now, I love it. I have a great support group ! I have 5 Kids and 16 Grand Kids and 2 Great Grand Daughters now and I also have a wonderful Church Family My Priest is probably My best Friend on the planet now. I was the first model to dance to music in Atlanta, Georgia. The music they played was this one. I loved the freedom after the formal catwalk and gestures we were used to doing. Every time I hear it I have to get up and dance. Takes me back to when I was 25 in 1970! Fabulous.

My high school sign language teacher almost let me and another girl do this song for a project, but she was concerned about the line of "I got up to wash my face, when I go back to bed someone's taken my place." She said it sounded like a veiled reference to oral sex, and she was worried she would get in trouble if the wrong person heard she allowed it. So now I just sign it almost every time I hear it playing! I've always loved the peppy beat of this song (even though the lyrics are a tiny bit depressing) and it's really fun to sign.

When the great Dan Ingram would play this song on WABC (and later on WCBS-FM) at the point in the song where Si & Gar sing:
"...When I come back to bed someone's taken my place..." he would thrown in his "DAN INGRAM!" jingle. He also did that to the Tony Orlando/Dawn song "Sweet Gypsy Rose" in the intro where Tony sang: "...Can't somebody tell what's got into her.. (DAN INGRAM!)

1.Go and check out todays music scene and admit that there are just as much talented ppl as always and that you are wrong (tell me any old artist other than Clapton and i will say 3 new ones playing similar music just as well as the old)
2.Go and check out the likes of the B52s or Blümchen and realize that shitty music isn't a new thing(and no, don't tell me that the B52s is a comedy band. Gangnam Style is comedy too, thats a bad excuse for not being talented)

First heard this on a Pan American 747 heading into London from Los Angeles in its original release.. Listened to it over and over as the Boeing replayed it every hour. One of the great early harmonies. Fun ride. As we entered London airspace, the Captain announced it was the maiden voyage of the plane (!) The lights had been blinking and other things along the way so it was quite a relief for my mom and dad. We landed and then toured England and Scotland (our ancestry) -- still a favorite and probably the earliest major harmony I heard (I have relative perfect pitch which is somewhat of a curse frankly.)

Sound of Silence is taking wings again as Paul Simon endorsed David Draiman (Disturbed ) singing that very same song written by Simon many years ago...Draiman does the song justice and I never tire from listening to his powerful rendition .. enjoy the music !!
