New York Is My Home
Paul Simon Dion Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The morning came today
With rain and sheets of grey
The subway rocked me out of bed
To take me on my way

Where I go, I go in style
Each and every mile
You know, I′m not alone
New York is my home
I got a girl up in the Bronx
She treats me like a king
I'll give her anything she wants
She is my everything

She can be hard as concrete
Soft as a summer breeze
We can wake the dawn
New York is my home

New York is calling me
It′s on the phone
It's like the rooftop songs
Up from the cobblestones

You will never hear me say
"The city street's too loud"
I hear a gospel hymn
In every passing crowd

It trails me and it tails me down
To central park
Even after dark
New York is my home

New York is calling me
And now I find
The city never sleeps
It′s my state of mind

The breezes blow
And take me where the Hudson never flows
The harbour light shines on the piers
As all young lovers know

I can touch the world
As it sails in from everywhere
I′m not alone
New York is my home

New York is calling me
And now I find
The city never sleeps
It's my state of mind

The breezes blow
And take me where the Hudson never flows
The harbour light shines on the piers
As all young lovers know

I can touch the world
As it sails in from everywhere
I′m not alone
New York is my home

I'm not alone
New York is my home

1961 is when I first heard Dion. I was 10.

At that time I had a friend (i.e., Donald McBride) who was abou my age. He was, at my request, allowing me to play and/or listen to his record collection, which consisted of 200 45's (i.e.,45rpm plastic records).

Dion's Runaround Sue was one of the songs in his collection. The record label was dark green and "reo" was the name of the publisher that was printed on the label. Runaway Girl was on the other side of the record.

After I heard Runaround Sue and Runaway Girl, from Donald's collection, I was looking forward to every new song that Dion came out with. He became one of my many all-time favorite artists.

To this day, I am very pleasantly surprised that his voice has not changed much. However, I am a little disappointed when I hear him, today, sing his 1960's songs, because he doesn't seem to have the ability to sing them anywhere near the way he used to sing them in the old days.

I'm a Texas Bubba and have no ties or desires for New York. Dion DiMucci and Paul Simon are only a few years older than I am. I grew up listening to Dion and a few years later Simon and Garfunkel. And of course all the 60's and 70's and up to now. But I have to say this song, this video is an absolute masterpiece. The lyrics, the harmony, the music is perfect! This is so wonderful to be in this stage of life to hear some true masters paint a masterpiece!

It blows my mind to think that this man was once on tour with Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper, and Richie Valens....now he has new music in 2015! Amazing

@punkyagogo

Especially considering so many of those young rock and roll and doo wop acts died shortly after: Eddie Cochran, Bobby Darin, Patsy Cline, Frankie Lymon, etc. It was almost like a curse. It’s amazing that Dion escaped it and is still making music today.
