Weller's eleventh studio album, Sonik Kicks, was released on 19 March 2012. The Green Songfacts reports that it was recorded in Wellerβs own Black Barn Studios in Ripley, Surrey, with co-producer Simon Dine and engineer Charles Rees.
Born John William Weller in Stanley Road, Woking, he was also a central figure in the Mod revival. As the leader of the Jam, Paul Weller fronted the most popular British band of the punk era, influencing legions of English rockers that ranged from his mod-revival contemporaries to the Smiths in the '80s and Oasis in the '90s. During the final days of the Jam, he developed a fascination with Motown and soul, which led him to form the sophisti-pop group the Style Council in 1983. As the Style Council's career progressed, Weller's interest in soul developed into an infatuation with jazz-pop and house music, which eventually led to gradual erosion of his audience β by 1990, he couldn't get a record contract in the UK, where he had previously been worshipped as a demi-god. As a solo artist, Weller returned to soul music as an inspiration, cutting it with the progressive, hippie tendencies of Traffic. Weller's solo records were more organic and rootsier than the Style Council, which helped him regain his popularity within Britain. By the mid-'90s, he had released three successful albums which were both critically-acclaimed and massively popular in England, where contemporary bands like Ocean Colour Scene were citing him as an influence. Just as importantly, many observers, while occasionally criticizing the trad-rock nature of his music, acknowledged that Weller was one of the few rock veterans that had managed to stay vital within the second decade of his career.
This Is No Time

This is no time for turning down
This is no age for wondering
All too much we stumble and fall
We stumble and fall
This is no time for mumbling
This is no time for forgetting your lines
All too much we stumble and fall
We stumble and fall
This is no time for dreaming
When you sleep you wake to find
That something or someone
Has stolen your precious time
As you start to climb
Oh, as you start to climb, yeah
This is no time to go missing
Though it is the time we'd like to most
This is no age to go fishing
All too soon it will be us getting caught
As we stumble and fall
Too weak to crawl
The lyrics of "This Is No Time" by Paul Weller express a sense of urgency and importance that demands action and focus. The song encourages listeners to wake up and pay attention, warning against wasting time, forgetting what's important, and allowing personal weaknesses to hold us back. The repetition of "we stumble and fall" emphasizes the need for vigilance and intentional living, reminding us that the consequences of inaction and negligence can be severe.
The first verse encourages the listener to hold on to their convictions and not falter in the face of adversity. The second verse highlights the importance of being clear and articulate with our words, and not allowing laziness or carelessness to detract from our message. The third verse speaks to the dangers of apathy and complacency - the idea that we cannot afford to rest and must always be working towards our goals, lest time slip away from us.
Overall, the message of the song is inspirational and motivating, challenging listeners to make the most out of their time and resist the urge to give in to distractions and weaknesses. It's a call to be intentional and intentional living, and to never give up on our dreams and aspirations.
