You Brought a New Kind of Love to Me
Paul Whiteman and Bing Crosby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If a nightingale could sing like you
they'd sing much sweeter than they do,
For you've brought a new kind of love to me.

If the sandman brought me dreams of you
I?d want to sleep my whole life through,
For you've brought a new kind of love to me.
I know that I'm the slave, you're the queen,
But still you can understand that underneath it all
you're the maid and I am only a man.
I would work and slave The whole day through,

If I could hurry home to you,
For you've brought a new kind of love to me.

Overall Meaning

The song "You Brought a New Kind of Love to Me" by Paul Whiteman and Bing Crosby is about finding a new love that is unlike any other. The lyrics express the idea that the singer has found a love that is so powerful, it has transformed their life into something new and unexpected. The comparison to a nightingale's song suggests that this new love is not only sweet but also rare and special. The singer is saying that this person has brought a type of love that is beyond anything they could have imagined.

The second verse suggests that the singer is so enamored with this new love that they would want to sleep forever if it meant dreaming of them. The chorus continues to emphasize the transformative power of this love, as the singer says they are willing to work and slave all day long just to be able to hurry home to their new love. The lyrics also play with traditional gender roles, with the singer acknowledging that the person they love is the queen while they are the slave, but then turning that idea on its head by suggesting that the person they love is also the maid, and they are just a man who is in love.

Bing is my favorite male singer, but his vocal here always seems to me not quite up to his usual standards. Still, even sub par Bing is better than most at their best. In this detailed chart, arranger Ferde Grofé certainly does gives this wonderful song the attention it deserves -- and yet it's Lang's comping to Bing's vocal that is my favorite part of record.
