Springfield native and former groundskeeper at Oak Ridge Cemetery (where he's buried), there's a stone marking where Lincolns casket sat for years near an old supply shed in the middle of the cemetery. While the original shed no longer exists because they've tore down and rebuilt it multiple times because the cemetery has over 80k internments and that shed still serves its purpose of storing higher quality soil to place over recently filled graves. The stone is very easy to miss and kinda blends in but it sits within 20 yards of The Grand Army of The Republic memorial. You can go around to the back of the memorial as it's built into a hill and see the back entrance to the tomb. It's locked off and nobody is allowed back there but it's literally just square tubing and a walmart padlock. It costs me nothing to type this out but thanks for letting me ramble on about the time I got to hyperfixate on history by lugging around a weed wacker all day 😂

Yea. This is true. At the time there was actually an honor guard that like 9 guys were appointed to politically from the city of Springfield Illinois. One of the guys called up his 14 year old son at a local highschool at lunchtime and told him to get his ass down to the cemetery to be present as a witness when the casket was opened. That boy later died of cancer in 1969 and was the last living person to physically look at the body of Abraham Lincoln 36 years after his death. Today there is a big memorial building for him but his corpse is actually buried in the center a 15'x15 cubed concrete block underground right outside the building.

I’m from Springfield illinois, where he lived the majority of his life and was then buried here, I visit Oak Ridge cemetery every year where his tomb is, his body was stolen twice, and before they buried him under 6 feet of marble they did indeed exhume his body (I already thought that was known fact not theory) Lincoln is also a reason why roses are now put on graves, back when his body had to take a grueling 2 week trip by train, the stench began to spread especially after he started to become slick and green from the embalming, so as the train passed through towns, the people who lived in them would throw roses onto the tracks to mask the rancid smell of death, the soldiers would also drop lilac under the carriage wheels holding his casket as they transported the body from place to place or at least that’s what the “fun museum facts!” Says in his museum here in my hometown. I’ve always found his history and his influence over the culture of my home still affects us today, I live in Houston now but I find myself coming back at least twice a year.

So, there’s a LOT missing from that story. Lincoln was “buried” like 3-4 times between 1865 and 1901. There was an attempt to steal his body, he was moved to the basement of the mortuary, his coffin was disguised by loose lumber, and when he was finally laid to rest in 1901 he was viewed to ensure that it was him. The combination of his facial bruising (from being shot in the head!), the several embalmings, and 35 years left his face appearing as a bronze statue.

He is buried below the mortuary encased in concrete, so that he will Rest In Peace.
