I Won't Last a Day Without You
Paul Williams Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Day after day I must face a world of strangers
Where I don't belong, I'm not that strong
It's nice to know that there's someone I can turn to
Who will always care, you're always there

When there's no getting over that rainbow
When my smallest of dreams won't come true
I can take all the madness the world has to give
But I won't last a day without you

So many times when the city seems to be
Without a friendly face, a lonely place
It's nice to know that you'll be there if I need you
And you'll always smile, it's all worthwhile

When there's no getting over that rainbow
When my smallest of dreams won't come true
I can take all the madness the world has to give
But I won't last a day without you

Touch me and I end up singing
Troubles seem to up and disappear
You touch me with the love you're bringing
I can't really lose when you're near

If all my friends have forgotten half their promises
They're not unkind, just hard to find
One look at you and I know that I could learn to live
Without the rest, I found the best

When there's no getting over that rainbow
When my smallest of dreams won't come true
I can take all the madness the world has to give
But I won't last a day without you

When there's no getting over that rainbow
When my smallest of dreams won't come true

I can take all the madness the world has to give
But I won't last a day without you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Paul Williams's song I Won't Last a Day Without You express a sense of vulnerability and the need for emotional support from someone in a world that can be harsh and lonely. The singer is lonely, not strong enough to face daily struggles alone and feels like a stranger in the world. However, the song is also about the redemptive power of love and the transformative impact that it can have on someone's life. When the loved one is present, even the darkest moments become bearable, and troubles seem to disappear.

The song describes the singer's reliance on the loved one and their importance in his life. He stresses that the rainbow seems impossible to reach, and small dreams are hard to come true, yet he can endure the world's madness with the support of his loved one by his side. The chorus is repeated twice, reinforcing the idea that the singer would not last long without the emotional support of the loved one. The song is poignant, emotional, and its melody and lyrics resonated with many people, making it an enduring classic that is still played on the radio and covered by various artists.

If one can sing a song in a very relaxed manner but can connect the soul; I can call him simply the best. Yes, that's Paul William.

One of my favorite songwriters, and I prefer Paul's recordings of his songs--nobody does them better than he does. I was lucky enough to see Paul in concert with my other favorite songwriter, Jimmy Webb. I got to talk to him afterwards and told him how much his music has meant to me. In fact, the title song from this album saved my life. Great album by a wonderful songwriter and a wonderful man! Love you Paul!

I prefer Paul's original versions too

Ser Bronn

I agree, his versions are better. You can really feel that he felt the words while singing.

Gia A

Yes, Paul didn't turn his songs into easy listening fluff. Sorry Carpenters.
