Rainy Days and Mondays
Paul Williams Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Talkin' to myself and feelin' old
Sometimes I'd like to quit
Nothin' ever seems to fit
Hangin' around
Nothin' to do but frown
Rainy days and Mondays always get me down

What I've got they used to call the blues
Nothin' is really wrong
Feelin' like I don't belong
Walkin' around
Some kind of lonely clown
Rainy days and Mondays always get me down

Funny, but it seems I always wind up here with you
Nice to know somebody loves me
Funny, but it seems that it's the only thing to do
Run and find the one who loves me (the one who loves me)

What I feel has come and gone before
No need to talk it out
We know what it's all about
Hangin' around
Nothin' to do but frown
Rainy days and Mondays always get me down

Funny, but it seems that it's the only thing to do (only thing to do)
Run and find the one who loves me

What I feel has come and gone before
No need to talk it out
We know what it's all about
Hangin' around

Nothin' to do but frown
Rainy days and Mondays always get me down
Hangin' around (hangin' around)
Nothin' to do but frown

Rainy days and Mondays always get
Me down

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Paul Williams's song Rainy Days and Mondays expresses the feelings of loneliness, isolation and depression. The singer seems to be talking to himself, feeling old and sometimes wishing he could quit. He believes that there is nothing that fits and that he is just hanging around and nothing to do but frown. The continuous rain and gloominess of Mondays seem to make everything worse.

The singer then acknowledges that what he has is just the blues and not anything wrong. He feels like he doesn't belong anywhere and just walks around some kind of lonely clown. He comes to the realization that rainy days and Mondays always get him down. However, the irony is that he always ends up with someone who loves him, but he still runs to find this person.

The last verse is a repetition of the feelings of isolation and loneliness, emphasizing that even though the singer knows what's going on, there's nothing anyone can do to change it. Rainy days and Mondays always seem to get him down.
