Another Day
Paul Linda McCartney Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Every day she takes a morning bath she wets her hair
Wraps a towel around her as she's heading for the bedroom chair
It's just another day
Slipping into stockings, stepping into shoes
Dipping in the pocket of her raincoat
It's just another day
At the office where the papers grow she takes a break
Drinks another coffe and she finds it hard to stay awake
It's just another day

Do do do do do do, it's just another day
Do do do do do do, it's just another day

So sad, so sad
Sometimes she feels so sad
Alone in her apartment she'd dwell
Till the man of her dreams come to break the spell
Ah, stay, don't stand her up
And he comes and he stays but he leaves the next day
So sad
Sometimes she feels so sad

As she posts another letter to the sound of five
People gather 'round her and she finds it hard to stay alive
It's just another day

Do do do do do do, it's just another day
Do do do do do do, it's just another day

So sad, so sad
Sometimes she feels so sad
Alone in her apartment she'd dwell
Till the man of her dreams come to break the spell
Ah, stay, don't stand her up
And he comes and he stays but he leaves the next day
So sad
Sometimes she feels so sad

Every day she takes a morning bath she wets her hair
Wraps a towel around her as she's heading for the bedroom chair
It's just another day
Slipping into stockings, stepping into shoes
Dipping in the pocket of her raincoat
It's just another day

Do do do do do do, it's just another day
Do do do do do do, it's just another day

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Another Day" depict the monotonous routine of a woman's life. The opening lines portray her everyday morning ritual of bathing and dressing up for work. The woman is shown to be working in an office where the papers never seem to end, and she struggles to stay awake by drinking coffee. The song goes on to describe how the woman feels sad and alone in her apartment until the man of her dreams comes along to break the spell, but he eventually leaves. She finds it hard to stay alive, and people gather around her, but it's just another day.

The song is a reflection of the struggles faced by many individuals who lead a routine life, and emphasizes how one's everyday life is often filled with mundane tasks, and how one can feel sad, lonely, and unfulfilled. The doo-doo-doo melody in the background gives the song an upbeat tone, which contrasts with the lyrics, reminding us that despite life's routine, time doesn't stop, and every day is an opportunity to find joy.

The ANOTHER DAY / OH WOMAN, OH WHY single was released February 1971, and neither song was included on either MCCARTNEY (released April 1970) nor RAM (released May 1971). Another Day was the first song recorded for the RAM sessions and credits David Spinozza on electric guitar and Denny Seiwell on drums. Both songs WERE included as bonus tracks on the 2012 re-issue of RAM. BTW, Spinozza also worked with LENNON on MIND GAMES and STARR on RINGO THE 4TH.
