This Land Is Your Land
Paul and Mary Peter Lyrics

This land is your land, this land is my land
From California, to the New York Island
From the Redwood Forest, to the Gulf Stream Waters
This land was made for you and me

I roamed and rambled, and I followed my footsteps
To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts
And all around me a voice was singing
This land was made for you and me!

This land is your land, this land is my land
From California, to the New York Island
From the Redwood Forest, to the Gulf Stream Waters
This land was made for you and me

As I went walking that ribbon of highway
I saw above me that endless skyway
I saw below me those golden valleys
This land was made for you and me!

This land is your land, this land is my land
From California, to the New York Island
From the Redwood Forest, to the Gulf Stream Waters
This land was made for you and me

As the sun was shining, and I was strolling
And the wheat fields waving, and the dust clouds rolling
As the fog was lifting, a voice was saying
"This land was made for you and me!"

This land is your land, this land is my land
From California, to the New York Island

From the Redwood Forest, to the Gulf Stream Waters
This land was made for you and me

Overall Meaning

The song "This Land Is Your Land" was written and originally recorded by Woody Guthrie in 1940. The song was later popularized by the folk duo Peter, Paul and Mary in the 1960s. The song has often been considered a patriotic anthem in the United States, and the lyrics highlight the beauty and diversity of the country.

The chorus of the song repeats the line "This land was made for you and me", emphasizing the idea that America was founded on the principles of freedom and opportunity for all. The song's verses describe the various landscapes and regions of the country, from the California coast to the New York Island, from the Redwood Forest to the Gulf Stream Waters. The lyrics also touch on themes of individualism and the pursuit of happiness, with the line "I roamed and rambled, and I followed my footsteps".

The song has been interpreted in various ways over the years. Some see it as a celebration of the natural beauty of America, while others view it as a call for social justice and equality. Guthrie himself was an outspoken political activist and many of his songs reflected his socialist beliefs. Regardless of interpretation, the song remains beloved by many as a symbol of the American spirit and values.

his Land Is Your Land
Words and Music by Woody Guthrie

This land is your land, this land is my land
From California to the New York island,
From the redwood forest to the Gulf Stream waters;
This land was made for you and me.

As I was walking that ribbon of highway
I saw above me that endless skyway;
I saw below me that golden valley;
This land was made for you and me.

I've roamed and rambled and I followed my footsteps
To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts;
And all around me a voice was sounding;
This land was made for you and me.

When the sun came shining, and I was strolling,
And the wheat fields waving and the dust clouds rolling,
As the fog was lifting a voice was chanting:
This land was made for you and me.

As I went walking I saw a sign there,
And on the sign it said "No Trespassing."
But on the other side it didn't say nothing.
That side was made for you and me.

In the shadow of the steeple I saw my people,
By the relief office I seen my people;
As they stood there hungry, I stood there asking
Is this land made for you and me?

Nobody living can ever stop me,
As I go walking that freedom highway;
Nobody living can ever make me turn back
This land was made for you and me.

@prmarsh

They did it in their 1988 Holiday Concert as well with a different verse specifically for the Christmas season. Does anyone have it? It used to be up here but it has been taken down.
