Nessun Dorma
Pavarotti and Friends Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Nessun dorma
Tu pure, o Principessa
Nella tua fredda stanza
Guardi le stelle
Che tremano d'amore e di speranza
Ma il mio mistero è chiuso in me
No, no, sulla tua bocca lo dirò
Quando la luce splenderà
Ed il mio bacio scioglierà il silenzio
Che ti fa mia
(Il nome suo nessun saprà
E noi dovrem, ahimè, morir, morir)
Dilegua, o notte
Tramontate, stelle
Tramontate, stelle
All'alba vincerò
Vincerò
Vincerò
The famous aria "Nessun dorma" from Giacomo Puccini's opera Turandot is sung by Prince Calaf as he enters an unknown city and sees the stunning Princess Turandot for the first time. The lyrics describe the Princess gazing at the stars while Prince Calaf contemplates the mystery of his love for her. He sings of revealing his identity to the Princess only when the dawn arrives and his kiss will break the silence that keeps him from her. The final lines of the aria announce that he will win her love and triumph over all obstacles.
There are several possible interpretations of these lyrics. One is that Prince Calaf is a confident, even arrogant character who believes that he can conquer Turandot's heart through the power of his love. He sees Turandot's coldness and aloofness as a challenge, and he is determined to overcome it by proving that he is worthy of her love. Another interpretation is that the aria is a meditation on the nature of love and the mystery of attraction. Prince Calaf recognizes that his love for Turandot is a mystery, something that cannot be explained or understood, but he still believes that it is real and powerful enough to overcome any obstacle.

The tale says Luciano spent years trying to tell Michael "Trust me, you're a opera singer". Michael didn't believe it. Once Luciano invited Michael for a week at his home at Naples. They went to the studio and Michael sung Nessun Dorma. At the end Luciano hugged him and said "See Michael, what did I told you? You're a opera singer." They became very close friends until Luciano's death. Michael never stopped singing opera since as a tribute to Luciano.

Thank you for sharing the interesting history behind this!! I’ve seen Bolton perform this live and it was absolutely amazing! Also he is one of the friendliest/sincere and humble artists I’ve ever met.

for a pop singer Bolton is a phenomenal singer. He's no Pavarotti, but it's pretty incredible what he can do.

Listening tonight brought me back to 1995, September 16 and this memorable moment where I stood next to Michael Bolton. Yes he delivered it in a hugh way and yes he was modest as well. Big respect for both. Luciano who gave him an opportunity and Michael who delivered it. Melancholy mixed with pride.
