Billie
Pavement Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

La, la, la, la, la, la, la, etc.

Billie and my friend the saint,
You're perfect in so many ways,
But you never looked hard
At a fetus in a jar
You never saw your mama change.
And this wonderland of spite,
Does not shine into your night,
Like widows are seen
As stigmatised beings,
Who ought to have second chance.

And hurricanes spin
Like debutantes in a trance.

Sue the fortune-teller,
Rue the rising tide,
General Washington,
Patented that skull,
Throw him out.

Ship that hollandaise,
Feel the heart fell of touch
See the longer you tease,
The stronger the needs,
The highs and the fruit are long.

Up to the one a kid,
Call the bluff when the money's in,
You're a hungry matron,
And you are just what I need,
I was tired of the best years of my life.

Sue the fortune-teller,
Rue the rising tide,
General Washington,

Patented that skull,
Throw him out.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Pavement's "Billie" are cryptic and elusive, but reveal a certain sense of dissatisfaction with the world and a longing for something more. The song seems to be directed at someone named Billie and the singer's "friend the saint," both of whom are described as "perfect in so many ways." However, the singer suggests that they lack a certain depth of understanding or empathy, as they have never "looked hard at a fetus in a jar" or "saw your mama change."

The following lines describe a "wonderland of spite" that does not offer solace or comfort to those who are marginalized or stigmatized, such as widows. The last two lines of this verse, "And hurricanes spin/Like debutantes in a trance," convey a sense of chaos and disorientation, perhaps reflecting the singer's disillusionment with the state of the world.

The second half of the song becomes even more surreal, as the singer implores someone to "Sue the fortune-teller" and "Rue the rising tide." The verse ends with the line "Throw him out," which may be a reference to someone specific, but its meaning is unclear. The final verse is addressed to someone who is called a "hungry matron," and the singer implies that they are looking for someone to satisfy their needs. The phrase "I was tired of the best years of my life" is melancholic and suggests a sense of regret or missed opportunity.

Overall, the lyrics to "Billie" are open to interpretation and offer a somewhat enigmatic glimpse into the psyche of the singer.

I especially love the last minute or so of instrumental. It's hard to explain and describe. It is wistful and mellow. Not a lot happening, maybe some subtle note changes but the guitar is so expressive, the sound so evocative. Some harmonica. SWEET!

Anthony Navarro

Yes yes. Me too. Pavement rocks and also does free , loose and easy vibes. Wowee zowie has some tunes like that vibe too

JDFitzpatrick

I agree. The last part of the song has brought tears to my eyes quite a few times. Enchanting and beautiful.
