Mussle Rock
Pavement Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Blue stones are cast again
Feeling like I′m one of them too
Pelican road is closed in summer
Feel like I wasted my day

How will I know?
How will I know?
Wheat fields are turning gold
Lunches I eat were always cold
Peanut nut rolls mysteriously
I think my uncle saw me do it

How will I know?
How will I know?

Overall Meaning

In the song Mussle Rock by Pavement, the lyrics paint a picture of being stuck or lost in a place that once felt like home. The opening line “Blue stones are cast again” sets the stage for a feeling of repetition and familiarity. The following lines, “Feeling like I’m one of them too” express a sense of being stuck in the same patterns and cycles as the blue stones. The next line “Pelican road is closed in summer” implies a limitation or obstacle in the singer’s surroundings. This obstacle is further reinforced by the line “Feel like I wasted my day.”

The repeated question “How will I know?” adds a layer of uncertainty and confusion to the song. The singer is searching for a way to find direction or clarity in their situation. The next verse brings in new imagery with “Wheat fields are turning gold,” which symbolizes change and transition. The line “Lunches I eat were always cold” suggests a lack of warmth or comfort in the singer’s daily life. The final line “I think my uncle saw me do it” adds a sense of guilt or shame to the song, alluding to a secretive or questionable activity.

Overall, Mussle Rock conveys a feeling of being stuck or lost in the familiar, and the struggle to find direction or change in that state.

Why on God’s green earth is it so hard to find this song on YouTube. Beautiful, simple, gut gripping guitar!

Fuzzy memories of Stephen M. dedicating this song to the Phish heads in the crowd at a Montreal show many moons ago (I was one of them, wearing my green Phish shirt). I didn't know it was a B-side at the time and never heard the tune before. It made sense when I heard that guitar lick that comes in at 53 secs. Trey would have appreciated the gesture. Mark's bass gear unfortunately stopped working that night but great show. Pavement forever.
