Shady Lane
Pavement Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Blind date with the chancer
We had oysters and dry lancers
And the check when it arrived we went dutch, dutch, dutch, dutch
A redder shade of neck on a whiter shade of trash
And this emory board is giving me a rash
I'm flat out
You're so beautiful to look at when you cry
Freeze, don't move
You've been chosen as an extra in the movie adaptation of the sequel to your life

A shady lane, everybody wants one
A shady lane, everybody needs one
Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god
Oh my god, oh your god, oh his god, oh her god
It's everybody's god, it's everybody's god
It's everybody's god, it's everybody's god
The worlds collide, but all that we want is a shady lane

Glance, don't stare
Soon you're being told to recognize your heirs
No, not me
I'm an island of such great complexity
Stress surrounds in the muddy peaceful center of this town
Tell me off in the hotel lobby right in front of all the bellboys
And the over-friendly concierge

A shady lane, everybody wants one
A shady lane, everybody needs one
Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god
Oh my god, oh your god, oh his god, oh her god
It's everybody's god, it's everybody's god

It's everybody's god, it's everybody's god
The worlds collide, but all that I want is a shady lane

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Pavement's "Shady Lane" explore the unnerving territory of blind dates: "Blind date with the chancer / We had oysters and dry lancers / And the check when it arrived / We went dutch, dutch, dutch, dutch." The singer expresses a sense of unease or disconnection with their date (the "chancer"), and the experience of splitting the bill "dutch" may imply that they don't feel like they owe this person any more than they would a stranger. The second verse continues this trend of discomfort: "A redder shade of neck on a whiter shade of trash / And this emory board is giving me a rash / I'm flat out / You're so beautiful to look at when you cry / Freeze, don't move / You've been chosen as an extra in the movie adaptation of the sequel to your life." Here, the contrast between red neck and white trash creates an image of sharp boundaries and social tension. The mention of the emory board, a tool for smoothing rough nails, could represent the need for people -- especially women -- to present a polished, attractive image at all times. The final line refers to the phenomenon of people feeling like outsiders in their own lives; being cast as an extra in the movie adaptation of your life is a typically witty, self-deprecating touch from Pavement.

The chorus of "Shady Lane" is a catchy, anthemic call for a "shady lane": "A shady lane, everybody wants one / A shady lane, everybody needs one / Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god / Oh my god, oh your god, oh his god, oh her god / It's everybody's god, it's everybody's god / It's everybody's god, it's everybody's god / The worlds collide, but all that we want is a shady lane." The idea of wanting or needing a shady lane is somewhat ambiguous, but the phrase itself suggests a retreat from the harsh light of the outside world -- a quiet, peaceful place to escape from the stresses and challenges of daily life. The repetition of "oh my god" and "everybody's god" adds to this sense of seeking refuge -- even if it's only a temporary or symbolic one.

Overall, "Shady Lane" is a great example of Pavement's signature style: clever, surreal lyrics that capture the anxieties and absurdities of everyday life, set to catchy, lo-fi guitar rock. It's a song that's both funny and melancholy, capturing a feeling of isolation and yearning for something more.

The great thing about Pavement is how they sound out of tune, but only enough to make their sound instantly recognizable. Brighten the Corners is their best album in my opinion, every song is great.

@moto-fl3rd

That's what it is!

@heidiherndon3890

What’s beautiful about that is that your actual entirely correct a ton of their songs don’t use a standard guitar tuning which makes it really annoying to learn sense you have to constantly change your guitars tuning

@negative-wishing-well

i read something where someone said people gathered to see pavement play was like watching someone make a sandwich in a cathedral. found the quote:

“This is the nicest venue I've ever been in, and it's like going to a cathedral and seeing a bunch of guys make a sandwich.

@mondop5270

Were you old enough to see them in the early 90s?

@williampowell15
