Alfie
Peabo Bryson Lyrics

Is it just for the moment we live
What's it all about when you sort it out, Alfie
Are we meant to take more than we give
Or are we meant to be kind
And if only fools are kind, Alfie
Then I guess it's wise to be cruel
And if life belongs only to the strong, Alfie
As sure as I believe there's a heaven above, Alfie
I know there's something much more
Something even non-believers can believe in
I believe in love, Alfie
Without true love we just exist, Alfie
Until you find the love you've missed you're nothing, Alfie
When you walk let your heart lead the way
And you'll find love any day, Alfie, Alfie
The song "Alfie" by Peabo Bryson is a powerful ballad that deals with existential questions about the meaning of life and the value of love. The central theme of the song is encapsulated in the first stanza, where the singer asks the eponymous Alfie what life is all about. He wonders whether it is just a fleeting moment or something more substantial. He also questions whether we are meant to be kind and giving or selfish and cruel. The chorus of the song suggests that love is the key to answering these questions.
The second stanza reinforces the idea that love is the ultimate answer to the riddle of life. The singer asserts his belief in love as something that even non-believers can believe in. He argues that without true love, we are just existing and that finding love is the key to being truly alive. The final stanza offers a poetic message that encourages listeners to follow their hearts and let love guide them. The song suggests that by doing this, they will eventually find love and, in turn, find meaning and purpose.
Overall, "Alfie" is a song that speaks to the human condition and the search for meaning and purpose in life. It suggests that love is the ultimate answer to these questions and that by following our hearts, we can find our way to happiness and fulfillment.
