My grandma’s next-door neighbor was a Pearl Harbor survivor. Apparently he got blown off the deck of the Arizona and ended up being in the water for like two days, clinging to wreckage. He was injured and slicked in oil and had lasting health problems because of his injuries. He was so traumatized by it that you couldn’t even say the word “Japanese” without triggering him. Apparently. I only met him twice and it’s not like I asked him about it. That would have been rude AF.

I was at Pearl Harbor on Dec 7, 1991 for the 50th anniversary of the attack and talked to a number of the men who fought that day. Without exception they were haunted by the things they saw and experienced. In spite of the many historical inaccuracies this documentary was well worth the time. The best presentation I've ever seen was the old one shown at the at the Arizona memorial prior to boarding the launch out to USS Arizona. One left that video truly shaken and humbled by the images and narration. Rest in peace, gallant crew of Arizona.

@Russ Ingle I was also deployed to Okinawa in 1995 and participated in a commemoration ceremony of the battle at Sugar Loaf Hill. Veterans from the US Army and Marines as well as the Imperial Japanese army and navy were there as well. I was able to accompany one of the Marines who had fought there as he struggled to locate the places where some of the men of his platoon had been killed or wounded. He explained that he had a debt to pay, long overdo, but until 1995 he couldn't bring himself to make the journey. Some of surviving buddies were going and that changed his mind. It was heartbreaking as he tried to find the places where his buddies were hit, the terrain had changed so much. Every fold in the ground, every rock, every detail was burned into his memory but very little remained. At times I had to leave him to himself, to mourn in private. I hope the experience brought some closure, I had the feeling that the memories had haunted him through those many years since the battle ended.

Since I was born during WWII, what I know was from history books. Another Japanese tactical blunder was failure to hit the submarine pens. The submarines were the first warships deployed to attack the Japanese navy and supply lines while our fleet was being repaired.

Hearing Stratton tell his story, as a veteran myself, I have to say that that was probably one of the few times he told that story, if ever told before. Big respect to him for sharing, he did that for us, and the future.

Indeed reminded me of Harry Patch, who famously only began to talk about the War once he became known for being one of it's last surviving Tommies.
In the same sense, he couldn't have known for decades in relative anonymity that he would actually have the last word on it from that perspective, respect to them both given the trauma that simply having survived a full life must be in and of itself.

Many of the WWII great navies sank or destroyed fighting in life and death in a bloody battle in high sea. But the US navy remains the only major navy force of the war which suffer a substantial causality of well trained sailors great battle ships and destroyers while on base with out doing any substantial effort to defend its position.

As the veterans said, America at that time was living in a state of fantasy and high ranking commanders didn't feel the burining of Europe and China will not reciprocate to them.

Perhaps this ignorance was the very cause of the war. WWII started while fascist Italy invade Abysinia(Ethiopia) but League of Nations ignore the cause of Abysinia and Moulin start the war. The allied later regretted their support for Mosoli. But the Emperor of Ethiopia make his point on the eve of WWII saying "You ignore our cause, It is us today and It will be you tommowrow." What a golden choice of words.

I was there for the 75 th reunion and am going back for the 80th I am 80 years old my mother had 3 brothers who all served in the war. One a medic in Europe. One on the ships delivering goods to England saw many ships go down by German torpedoes' and one who fought island to island against the Japanese. All came home and had great lives . MKL&ML So history of the war has always been of interest to me.

My Grandfather, rest his soul, a 30 year retired navy veteran, brought back horrific pictures of Japanese soldiers in holes, filled up to there necks in concrete as american military walked by, kicking, spitting and urinating on them. Atrocities are had by all guilty sides. Don't be fooled. In Iraq we had two briefings, one was required, telling us what we'er required to do, the second was what we should do.

The museum has a Japanese torpedo that was dredged up from the mud of the harbor. A video of the same torpedo crossing the harbor until it hit bottom was actually found. They are both on display. I would highly recommend a visit to the museum.

Has anyone ever answered why entire fleet was ordered into a shallow harbor with only 1 entrance/exit in time of war, and why reports of planes were ignored? The one captain who refused to add hi s ship to the carnage was court martialed.

In relation to the airborne attack on Pearl harbour and other installations/neighbourhoods the report of the midget submarine attack would, in my opinion, not have saved many lives, the attack by the Japanese naval air forces was not going to be stopped and the time from the midget sub report to the main attack did not leave time for many of the vessels on battle ship row to steam up and get out to sea, they would have had time to go to battle stations but not much more, and that is if the report was given enough urgency, the report of a lone midget sub would probably have been either disregarded as only a possibility or completely ignored as the harbour was deemed impregnable by the brass, believing that the water was to shallow for aerial torpedoes to work and the anti submarine nets would keep out the larger Japanese submarines. The most likely outcome of the report being given a higher level of urgency would, again in my opinion, result in a higher level of Japanese casualties and probably not as much damage being inflicted on the fleet at anchor.

I was post war kid 4 uncles in pacific theater they all survived 2 on shifts 2 infantry Island hopping all the way to Okinawa. They all came told stories of midget subs of Pearl Harbor, but stated was a secret but they told stories of these events. Many things we know about Pearl Harbor today was denied in 60s.

In the late 1970's or early 1980's there was a parade in Los Angeles honoring Pearl Harbor survivors. I was one of the police officers assigned to security for the group before and after the parade. They had displays of artifacts on floats that went in the parade. I met many men who were there. I don't remember the names of any of the men who were in the parade, there were so many. It was such an honor. Since many of us were veterans, they talked very freely and I think we heard stories that they didn't tell others.

Let's assume for a moment that the ships sorted or attempted to sortie after the alert from USS Ward. That doesn't mean they would have survived the attack. They very well could have been caught at Sea with inadequate air cover and sunk. The Army Air corps would have been concerned about protecting their bases and Pearl harbor itself and would have had to split their forces to try to protect both Pearl harbor and facilities and the ships at sea. If those ships had sunk at sea the toll could have been higher and the ships would have never been salvaged. You have to remember that the Hawaiian Islands are sea mounts with volcanoes. There isn't much shallow water around any of the islands. The submarine that the ward fired on and sank was found in four or 5,000 ft of water I think. That's right off the mouth to Pearl harbor. There's a lot of what ifs but there's so many variables involved it's impossible to say what the results would have been or would they have been better or worse.

I think there are some inaccuracies in the introduction namely the number servicemen killed, only two thousand and that the Japanese sunk The United States greatest ships; maybe they thought that at the time but aircraft carriers proved to be the most important not battleships.

I've never been too interested in the details of war. Because I am against it and it's so heartbreaking to hear. But I couldn't stop watching this. I learned so much. My father inlaw was in the navy, I believe it was around this time. He is a young 90 year old who is in better shape mentally and physically than me. I'm going to his house tomorrow and showing him this program. I think he will really enjoy it. I also had an uncle who died at 18 yrs old in the 40's in Ocaquinoa. As they mention, the Japanese failed to hit any of our aircraft carriers, but they also failed to destroy the drydocks and failed to hit the fuel tanks which had been filled with ship and aircraft fuel for the next six months. These were really critical mistakes.

The narrator stated that this was the first time the US had been attacked on its own soul. Hasn't he heard of the war of 1812. Read Day of Deceit to understand what really happened at Pearl Harbor.

Donald Stratton's story did not end after the attack. He later wrote a book, "All The Gallant Men." He was severely burned from the explosion suffering 2nd and 3rd degree burns over 65% of his body. He recounts what he went through after that. He was medically discharged after extensive treatment at Pearl and later at San Francisco. He was originally from Nebraska and after discharge the Navy couldn't even give him enough money for a bus/train ticket home so he hitchhiked from San Fran to Nebraska - still recovering from those burns. He felt guilty being home when all those other men were still fighting so he reenlisted. Navy at first refused him but he was very persistent. They finally agreed if he could pass boot camp again proving he could perform all the required duties. He did pass and was assigned to the destroyer USS Stack and was there in Tokyo Bay in September 1945 for the signing of the surrender. This hero was all guts and determination. Being there for the first day of WWII and the last day, too. I've read his book twice now and it is nothing if not amazing. He rejoined his old shipmates passing away at 98 y/o on February 15, 2020. His ashes were interned aboard the Arizona. You can get a copy of his book off of Amazon. You won't regret it.

@Alana Cragin Mr Bruner was in the same area as Mr Stratton when the magazine exploded. All those men survived due to the actions of Boatswains Mate 2nd Class Joe George on the USS Vestal, the repair ship moored next to Arizona during the attack. He had been assigned by his commanding officer to cut the mooring lines to Arizona so they could get away from the Arizona before anymore explosions occurred. The area that Stratton , Bruner, and the others were in was the only open escape route. He managed to throw a line across to them and then refused a direct order from the CO to cut that line. All of the survivors credit him for their survival. Stratton said that if any man that day deserved the Medal of Honor it was Joe George. The Navy refused to award it to him because he disobeyed that direct order from his Commanding Officer. Ironically Alana, Bruner's book is the next one on my list of 'Must Have' books. Another one you may enjoy is "Every Man a Hero' by Ray Lambert. He was an Army Medic who was in on the Invasions of N. Africa, Sicily, and Normandy where he was, along with his brother, badly wounded before being sent home.

I believe he was the last Arizona crewman who wished to be interned on the battleship. The gentleman, Arizona survivor Lauren Bruner, who passed just prior to Donald Stratton also wrote an amazing book called “Second to Last to Leave USS Arizona”. If you enjoyed mr stratton’s book, I highly recommend mr Bruner’s. I had the honor of meeting him at the 75th anniversary of the attack and he was sweet, wonderful and so humble (just like every Pearl survivor I met).

An outstanding video. Be careful when putting the finishing touches on your videos that you don’t rush and cut corners by not double checking your statistics presented in the narrative. The Battle of Okinawa resulted in the combat deaths of approximately 12,500 Americans, not 75,000 as you state 2:23:55. Trying not to sound nit-picky, because as I said it’s an extremely good video production.

How do you thank the members of the GREATEST GENERATION and their families?

I still think if the warnings from the USS WARD and about the incoming planes had been heeded, at least, the military could have been on general quarters. The plans in the air and the men not caught totally by surprise.

Also, Mr. Stratton made a passing comment how he was able to get off the USS ARIZONA. That's an event worth, at least, 5 minutes. If the sailor from the USS VESTAL had not thrown that line there would have been 5 less survivors. Also, that sailor was going against direct orders and how long it took for him to be recognized.

Again, may GOD bless our GREATEST GENERATION and their families.

Great video just one question what would jet fighter be doing at pearl harbor in 1941. I'm sure it was a a mistake. But there where no jet fighters in 1941 1hr :33min.. 50 cec. refering to us fiters as fighter jets

At about 1:29 is the minelayer USS Oglala. A Japanese torpedo hit the light cruiser USS Phoenix, the concussion sank the USS Oglala that was moored along side the USS Phoenix. In 1951 the USS phoenix was sold to Argentina and renamed the ARA General Belgrano. In 1982 the General Belgrano was sunk during the Falklands war by a British submarine.

It must be understood that with the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and other Asian countries that were colonized by the West, the occupation over Asia by the West could be stop. Although the Japanese occupation was even more terrifying, Europe's grip on Asia was deeply entrenched. So, the victims of the attack on Pearl Harbor and the victims of World War 2 in the Pacific, which culminated in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, were catalysts for the independence of countries in Asia. understanding this itself already gives me goosebumps. but I wonder is there any other path of destiny that doesn't result in this tremendous sacrifice?

Nah I heard it to .... Germany only had the jets and that was late in the war .....I love WWII history my granddad was in Normandy landings ..... All hail to the sacrifice of both sea land and air never forget what you did for us

Yes. The narrator says chased by “American fighter jets” at 1:33:56. That highly ignorant lie alone makes me question what other falsehoods are stated in this video as supposedly historical fact.

At 1:34:45, you said, "...At 8:10 AM, a Kat-te bomber..." Kat-te bomber??? I think you mean the Nakajima B5N (Japanese: 中島 B5N, Allied reporting name "Kate") which was the standard carrier-based torpedo bomber of the Imperial Japanese Navy for much of World War II.

One thing I hate about these documentaries is that whichever ship is the most famous for being damaged the most are always described as being the pride of the Navy.
They do the same thing with HMS HOOD.
Arizona was tragic, and should not be forgotten, but she was one Battleship of many in the Navy and part of the 7th Fleet. She was not per se the pride of the Navy, and or the pride of the Seventh Fleet. She was also not the newest battleship berthed there. Many sailors were more eager to serve aboard California, Tennessee, and or West Virgina just because they were newer ships with larger main guns.
I was on USS Ranger, and USS Kitty Hawk, and I loved them, and was happy to be on Aircraft Carriers. Most friends I had though wanted to be on Carl Vinson at the time though just due to how nice, clean and modern she was as compared to the older gals.

This attack was not well prepared. I'd send a submarine with 2-3 independant spotters, 2 radios, and some thousand dollars each a few weeks earlier to Hawaii. They'd no problems to spot if the aircraft carriers have left, or are leaving, or not.
Such a huge operation but "saving" to drop some spotters? Maximum risk at high costs.

And Americans did not set up any anti-torpedo nettings. well, this still happens nowadays, in different Navys of the world. And I don't realize why it is like that. Risking a 150Mio or 250 Mio Dollars ship, just because of lazyness to send a tuck boat to span a $ 20.000 or 40.000 netting some 5-10 meters before it. That's no cost-lost relation. Also other Navys don't do it this, somehow they seem to feel very safe.

Some one needs to do their homework! 75,000 Americans did not die on Okinawa. There were about 50,000 casualties total. 12,500 of those were deaths.
With that said, this was a great video! I had an uncle that fought there. He didn't talk about it too much.

The Japanese proved how cowardly there military acted what cheap and inhumane can one country act against another country my dad was in high school at that time he knew he was going to war he insisted in 1943 served in the navy left pearl all the way to Tokyo front door sorry for the loses at pearl harbor in 1941. Not sorry for what happened in Japan 1945 should have killed more. Dad passed away in 2005 nevertalked about the war. All his child hood friends never came home. May all these souls rest in peace ✌
