Some film things, Danny and Rafe are loosely based on two real USAAF pilots, Lt. Kenneth Taylor and George Welch. Both got airborne during the attack and were credited with shooting down six Japanese aircraft. Both went on to serve in the South Pacific and survived the war, both becoming aces. Taylor passed away in 2006. Sadly, Welch died in 1954 when his experimental F-100 Super Sabre came apart during a Mach 1.55 flight.

Several other pilots got airborne during the attack, including 2nd Lieutenant Philip M. Rasmussen. Using a P-36 Hawk he shot down a Zero, but was shot up by others. He managed to land back at base with over two-hundred holes in his aircraft. All the while Rasmussen was wearing his pajamas.

The C-47, or DC-3, 90395, is the same DC-3 shot down by a Stinger in 'Congo' (1995) and several other films, including Mulholland Falls, Quantum of Solace, and Con Air. As far as I know it's still airworthy.

The Zeros pictured here are not painted properly. The Zeros in the attack were white or off white all over. They did sport colored bands around the fuselage to denote their carrier, and yellow bands on their tails to denote leadership position.

Sizemore trying to warn Joe to turn, the handie-talkie he's using requires the antenna to be fully extended in order to work. It's the machine's on-off button. Since it's still capped, Sizemore's talking to himself.

@1:19 Joe's P-40 disappears. It's suppose to be replaced by CGI.

My Grandfather ( a Navy Pilot) was there - he said most of the Pilots were still off base because they were on leave, out on the town and it was hard to get back during the attack because all the cabbies who were Japanese/Hawaiians were hiding. When they did get back to Hickam Field the found that the Japanese Exchange Pilot that was in their group was slowly dying in the latrines from eating the broken glass out of his spectacles.

The reason some of the Zeros are green is that they used shots and cgi models of the last flying original Zero in the world still using the original Japanese engine, and she’s painted Army green. That bird lives in Chino, CA.

If I remember well Taylor and Welch took off from a remote airfield which wasn't attacked by the Japanese. They achieved to go in the air without fuss and took the Japaneses by surprise. I guess for Hollywood it's always better when you take off under fire and you escape through acrobatics.

Indeed. It was Haleiwa Field on the northwestern part of O'ahu. It was an auxiliary field originally used for civilian planes starting around 1933. The military took over it some time in early 1941. It was just a clearing in the woods by the beach. No facilities. After the attack the field was built up. There were facilities built that are still there today but overgrown and abandoned. Today it's back to just being a clearing in the woods. The military still use it for helicopter practices.

@TheGroundedAviator

Ken later called this film a piece of trash.

@MattKearneyFan1

Also the p40 were earlier models that had the nose mounted 30 cals

@Mgee58

Tom Sizemore always get the job done on every military roles he played

@Rildar

Rest in peace.
