Sure you can, it's the feeling you got the first time you heard him. I was in the back seat of my buddies car, late summer of 91, just got done rippin a few 3 footers, with my head laid back, looking up, and alive came on. I didn't understand right away what I just heard, I just knew it absolutely blew me away like no other band had ever done. 30 years later, with so many "top to bottom" records, I now feel, without ever meeting him, that I know already know Eddie very well personally. To me, that's how a testament to how good they are.

I'm with you all the way. I worked with a good friend of Andy's in Las Vegas. She was talking up his band as the next big thing once Apple was to drop. One day, she went to call him to let me say hello. When she couldn't get him after several attempts, she called her mom in Seattle to find out if she knew why Andy wasn't answering her calls. Her mom called her back saying Andy was at Harborview in critical condition. A few days later, my co-worker came in to work tearful and inconsolable after having been told of his death. Since, Mother Love Bone became a favorite, though I came to accept Pearl Jam . I even moved to Seattle in '92 to catch the vibe of life in the PNW.

I was a senior at Calvary Baptist High in Muskegon, Michigan... We were not aloud to go to movies, dances, or listen to rock music. The first time the class rebel shared his walkman and we split the headphone speakers. I was introduced to Eddie Vedder and all the rage. We sat in the back of the chapel and I knew that one day, I was going to run away from all of this. And if they ever ask me why, I would say, "I did what I had to do, and if there was a reason... it was you."

Throughout Ed’s early years as a musician, his demos would be made not from new blank tapes, but often from prerecorded cassettes of other artists’ actual albums that he would record over. In this case, Eddie commandeered an advance cassette of a Merle Haggard best-of compilation called “Greatest Hits Of The 80s” (which would come out Oct. 5,1990), recorded over it, slathered it with Wite-out and labeled it “For Stone + Jeff.” Appropriately, Ed left one track name visible, “A Friend in California.” With his creativity flowing, he also meticulously whited-out the album information below the tape view, only leaving the letters “E-D-D-I-E” visible.

Vedder wrote lyrics for three of the songs. He later described as a "mini-opera" entitled Momma-Son. The songs tell the story of a young man who, like Vedder, learns that he had been lied to about his paternity and that his real father is dead, grows up to become a serial killer, and is eventually imprisoned and sentenced to death. Vedder recorded vocals for the three songs, and mailed the demo tape back to Seattle. The three songs would later become Pearl Jam's "Alive", "Once", and "Footsteps".

Its amazing how "alive" is pretty much the same. He has the verse and chorus down pat. In "once" he had the chorus and the last one is "Times of Trouble" that was on The Temple of the Dog album and Chris Cornell ended up writing for that one. Whats really incredible is the chemistry that they already had before they ever actually met one another. I mean Alive was tweaked at minimum. It was already completed from the beginning when he put his voice to it. They just got together and touched it up a little.

before Eddie demanded that PJ punk out and speed up every fucking song and lose the groove forever...love that Eddie was the nobody and the unknown here. He takes far too much credit for the band's early successes. The band itself was tight as shit and featured so much great musicianship and creativity. His vocals certainly completed it all, but there were 4 other guys that made the magic first.

@ianA~ Everyone appreciate everyone in the band, we're talking and commenting on Eddie because this is the tape that Stone and Jeff sent to Eddie to put his singing to the instruments, so we're just in awww about what we heard and what Stone and Jeff heard for the first time, that's all!! Every band member is amazing and we know this. We absolutely love Pearl Jam ❤️🤘

I don’t think Eddie has ever taken credit for any of it. He’s always been humble and grateful to Jack irons and the other guys in PJ for everything.

Finally got to hear what started it all. Once? wow how different yet the same. Footsteps is still one of the greatest songs ever and Alive is what it is. Thanks for sharing

Yeah, PJ wouldn't be right without Jeff, Stone, and Mike. They don't get the credit they deserve for what they create before Ed adds his amazing lyrics. They were all so fortunate to have found each other. I saw a video "tribute to Jeff's parents" I think, where Ed recognized the hard work that goes into keeping relationships alive. Jeff's and Stone's parents had each been together for like 48 years at the time. Then he made a joke that Stone and Jeff were together for 42 of them or some such silliness :-)

What? They get plenty of credit. They're considered one of the best bands, they are being inducted into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame this year, and McCready is considered one of the best rock guitarists around.

they are my favorite band... but here in Canada, I don't hear about them nearly enuff, just the basic Black, alive, Jeremy songs over and over... I also play rocksmith and follow people on twitch playing rocksmith, with people requesting songs.... I think over a year ive only heard 2 pearl jam requests.... I don't get it.... its all about nirvana.... not enough people know LOTS of Pj songs besides the basics, and I wish they did, cause they have sooo many good songs, and they are amazing live... and how often do u hear McCready mentioned among great guitarists....I think he is, but I never hear him mentioned, unless I'm at a PJ concert

Eddie’s great, but I can’t help but imagine what Alive was like as Dollar Short with Andy Wood’s singing and lyrics. Stone once said that MLB played it live a couple of times, at least once in Portland, Oregon. I wonder if anyone ever recorded one of the few times Andy ever sang it live?

It is so amazing how pretty much what Ed wrote and sang in this tape is what the songs really became, and made huge success. Only a few minor changes in Alive and Footsteps and adding the verses for Once.
