Speed Of Sound
Pearl Jam栀 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Yesterdays, how quick they change
All lost and long gone now
It's hard to remember anything moving at the speed of sound
Moving with the speed of sound

And yet I'm still holdin' tight to this dream of distant light
in that somehow I'll survive
But this night has been a long one
Waiting on a sun that just don't come

Can I forgive what I cannot forget
And live a lie?
I could give it one more try

Why deny this drive inside, just looking for some peace
Every time I get me some it gets the best of me

I'm not much left, you see

And yet I'm still holdin' tight to this dream of distant light
And that, somehow I'll survive
But this night has been a long one
Waiting on a word that never comes

A whisper in the dark
Is that you or just my thoughts
I'm wide awake and reaching out

It's gone so quiet now
Could it be I'm farther out?

Movin' faster than the speed of sound

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Pearl Jam's song "Speed of Sound" is a reflection on how fast time passes by and how fleeting moments can be. The first verse seems to be about how quickly time goes by and how memories can fade fast. The singer reflects on how it is hard to hold onto anything when life seems to be moving at the speed of sound. He is holding onto a dream of distant light, something that could be seen as hope or a reminder of a better time.

The second verse talks about the struggle of waiting for the sun to come up during a long and difficult night. The lyrics portray the feeling of hopelessness and questioning whether or not it is possible to forgive and move on from something that seems unforgivable. The singer struggles to find peace, as every time he does, it only ends up causing him more pain. He feels like he has nothing left and is just holding onto a dream of something better.

The chorus is a reminder that time keeps moving forward, and we have to move with it to survive. The lines "And yet I'm still holdin' tight to this dream of distant light/And that, somehow I'll survive" reinforce the idea that hope is essential in times of hardship. It is possible that the song's message is that we can overcome difficult times as long as we hold onto hope and move with the speed of time.

@Clauder.

Not too many bands can blur sonic melancholia and the uplifting all into one song…First time I heard it when it was released in mid-2005, over the cable radio station (remember those?) at our advertising agency in the studio bullpen, I knew it was an instant classic. Perfectly matched my mood at the time, for a whole host of reasons, and has stuck with me ever since. ❤
