Formed after the demise of Gossard and Ament's previous band, Mother Love Bone, Pearl Jam broke into the mainstream with their debut album, Ten, in 1991. Ten stayed on the Billboard 200 chart for nearly five years, and has gone on to become one of the highest-selling rock records ever, going 13× platinum in the United States. Released in 1993, Pearl Jam's second album, Vs., sold over 950,000 copies in its first week of release, setting the record for most copies of an album sold in its first week of release at the time. Their third album, Vitalogy (1994), became the second-fastest-selling CD in history at the time, with more than 877,000 units sold in its first week.
One of the key bands in the grunge movement of the early 1990s, Pearl Jam's members often shunned popular music industry practices such as making music videos or participating in interviews. The band also sued Ticketmaster, claiming it had monopolized the concert-ticket market. In 2006, Rolling Stone described the band as having "spent much of the past decade deliberately tearing apart their own fame."
Pearl Jam had sold more than 85 million albums worldwide by 2018, including nearly 32 million albums in the United States by 2012, making them one of the best-selling bands of all time. Pearl Jam was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017 in its first year of eligibility. They were ranked eighth in a readers' poll by Rolling Stone magazine in its "Top Ten Live Acts of All Time" issue. Throughout its career, the band has also promoted wider social and political issues, from pro-abortion rights sentiments to opposition to George W. Bush's presidency. Vedder acts as the band's spokesman on these issues.

Got Some
Pearl Jam Lyrics

What's wrong? Ah
Every time you can try, but can't turn on, your rock song
got some if you need it,
I got some if you need it
I got some if you need it,
I got some if you need it
Turn it up, turn it up
before it's gone,
let's everybody carry on, carry on
Turn it up, turn it up,
before its gone,
let's everybody get it on, get it on
precipitation, which side are you on?
Are you on the rise, are you falling down?
Let me know, c'mon let's go. Yeah
got some if you need it,
I got some if you need it
I got some if you need it,
I got some if you need it
Turn it up, turn it up,
before we're gone,
let's everybody carry on, carry on
Turn it up, turn it up,
before its gone,
let's everybody get it on, get it on
Get it now, get enough,
before its gone,
let's everybody carry on, carry on
Turn it up, set it off,
before its gone,
let's everybody carry on, carry on
This situation, which side are you on?
Are you getting out or are you dropping bombs?
Have you heard of diplomatic resolve? Yeah
Precipitation, which side are you on?
Are you trying hard, are you on the rise?
Let me know, c'mon let's go. Yeah
got some if you need it
I got some, oh, oh
Turn it up, turn it up,
before its gone,
let's everybody carry on, carry on
Turn it up, turn it up,
before its gone,
let's everybody get it on, get it on
This situation, which side are you on?
Are you getting out, are you dropping bombs?
Have you heard of diplomatic resolve? Yeah
Precipitation, which side are you on?
Are you getting out, are you a big dropped bomb?
Are you a puddle full of detriment? Oh
Got some, I got some
Carry on, carry on
got some if you need it,
I got some if you need it
Carry on, let's go
The song "Got Some" by Pearl Jam is a fast-paced, high-energy rock song with a catchy chorus that urges listeners to turn up the volume and carry on. The lyrics are somewhat cryptic but seem to focus on themes of personal empowerment, political resistance, and the search for meaning in uncertain times.
Throughout the song, the singer asks a series of questions about where the listener is, what they're feeling, and which side they're on. He also repeatedly offers up some unspecified "something" that he has if the listener needs it. This could be interpreted as a metaphor for emotional support, practical assistance, or perhaps a more general sense of hope or inspiration.
The chorus, with its insistent refrains of "turn it up" and "let's everybody carry on", gives the song an anthemic quality that invites listeners to join in and feel part of a larger collective experience. Overall, "Got Some" is a high-energy rock song with a positive, upbeat message that seems designed to uplift and energize listeners.
